" Hi, My husband who has a Ph.D in Electrical Engineering and currently teaches at a community college and myself are considering making a move to SA. We are Canadians and have two children, boy 7, girl 16 months. I have read as much as I can of things listed on this web site but have a few questions about what it is like to live there as a Canadian? What are the tax exemptions if any for Canadians? How do you know if you are working for a reputable company? I know the salary''s can be vastly different but what range can my husband expect? Anyway, anyone with any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Johanna Begin jbegin@supercity.ns.ca "

" I''m an engineer who worked for a Saudi company for 3 years. With your husband''s credentials he would have no problem getting a position in Saudi Arabia. Has he contacted any companies? The only possible way to go there is to have an employment contract with a company or the Government. That contract has to be in hand prior to getting work visas from the Saudi Embassy. The employment contract is an extremely important document. Everything - salary, benefits, vacations, transportation, housing, accomodations for family, education of children, EVERYTHING - must be spelled out. NEVER trust a Saudi to honor a verbal committment. Your husband should expect and demand a salary equal to the high end of what he would get in Canada for his education and experience. In Saudi Arabia, EVERYTHING is negotiable. I don''t know about Canada, but in the U.S., up to $70,000 per year is exempted from federal tax. In S.A. there are no taxes of any sort. "
