" Hello, I am French teacher in Ottawa and have been offered a teaching job in Saudi Arabia. I''m curious about the things I''ve read in the paper about the underground liquor trade and especially about the Canadian man who was arrested for a bombing and may be executed. I know the media can often make something big out of something that is actually small, but I''m wondering if it is even an issue over there. If anyone can ease my worry (and curiosity), that would be great. Madeline Anderson "

" Hello Madeline, Since my arrival in Oct 2000 it has been a very interesting experience, I hope to stay for a few years. please read the info on Saudi Arabia at this site, it will give you a good idea on what to expect. The items you mention are not an issue, if you get into trouble expect the worse, its like other places in the world. Please do not worry, look at it as an experience of a life time. Please contact me at hotmail for further info as I do not visit this site very often. "

" Hi,i''ve been living in jeddah since 1990,and a lot has changed. My advice to you is about 75% of what is reported about saudi is NOT true! Life is very different, but oh what an experience, you have to be open minded to live here,if you are then you will enjoy all saudi has to offer. life for an expat is very comfortable, except for none alchol. I think it is very safe,I know my kids are safer here than in the Uk,thats why I choose to stay. Tho if your a trouble maker, here life will be very uncomfortable, you can''t afford to get on the wrong side of the law,as punishment is very harsh! don''t hesitate to contact me if you want more info, from a womans point of view Trae "

" The underground liquor trade is very real. No Westerner has ever been executed for any crime. Sentenced, yes. But not executed. If your not involved there won''t be any problem :o) If you would like more info on living and working in Saudi Arabia, I have this expat club and website at : www.clubs.yahoo.com/clubs/expatsinsaudiarabia and www.expatsinsaudiarabia.com cherrio :o) leckie1uk "

My husband''s company is looking into assigning him to a two year stent in Saudi. I have always worked (more than 30 yrs now) is there any opportunity for american women who go to Saudi with their spouse to find employment? I''m not very good at sitting home and being a housewife? Or perhaps continued education would be an option. Is that possible? any info would be gratefully appreciated.

" Hi, That incident is really a local issue among the people that engage in that sort of business.. It does not affect the vast majority of expats living here. I have been here for 19 years and never had any problems except for a speeding ticket.. "
