I am seriously considering taking a position with my company that will cause my wife and I to relocate to Riyahd. We have been trying desperately to find info about life in American compounds in Riyahd. We have questions about everything. Anything you could tell us would be helpful/

" As an American who has lived in Riyadh for 14 years, I hope I can offer some advice. Your question is very broad, but here''s a little info: Life in Riyadh will be anything you make it. If you want a busy, active social life, you can have it. If you want to be hermits who only go out for work and grocery shopping, that''s OK too. Most compounds have plenty of activities from sports like tennis, bowling, and racquetball to crafts to bridge or even line dancing. In short, you won''t have any problem keeping active if you want to. Most compounds offer clean spacious living quarters and a central recreation center with a grocery store, video or book libraries, etc. Outside the compound there are lots of things to do also, from shopping in either modern malls or third world ""souks"". Many westerners buy a 4-wheel drive vehicle for treks into the desert which is always interesting. There is so much to talk about, but this is just a start. If you have more specific questions, please post them and I''ll do my best to answer them. I remember getting ready to come over here 14 years ago, and I was very anxious and nervous. But I''m really glad I made the decision to come here. Dave "

" It''s a big decision no matter how you look at it. And life here is unlike anything I''ve ever known. But I wouldn''t change a thing about our decision to move here. There is a transition period for everyone, there is alot to adjust to here. The compounds do offer alot of activities and clubs to keep you busy. Some compounds offer more than others. If you are able to choose then by all means try to look at as many as possible before making your decision. Feel free to contact my e-mail address if you would like some more specific info. Good Luck, Cara "

I am sending an employee to Riyadh for at least two years. He has lived in other areas of Saudi although is is unfamiliar with Riyadh. He would like to live in a compound. Would you be able to provide me with contact information for a few compounds in Riyadh? I would greatly appreciate the help. Thanks.

" David, I was just offered a position to work in Riyahd. Would you recommend any compounds for a single 31 year old guy that would offer a better than average living place with a similar age neighbors? I am an American, but worked and lived most of my life in Europe. To my understanding choosing a compound there is like choosing your social life, considering that I would not know a single soul in SA when I move there. Please help if you can. Thanks. "

" Hi! You ask for recommendations/referrals of Saudi compounds. I worked in Saudi for 15 months, from Feb.98 to May 2000, at King Khaled Eye Specialist Hospital, in Riyadh, as a single 44-year-old woman. I went ""everywhere"" in Riyadh and most of Saudi. My boyfriend lived at Fal Compound which is one of the most ""free"" and nicest compound in Riyadh, mostly Americans, British and Canadian. I am sorry I do not have an address contact of this compound, but I am sure you can track it down. It was a nice escape haven for me compared to my hospital compound where the religious police were running around our streets all the time. Fal Compound is worth checking out. Feel free to email me if you have other questions. It was an amazing experience. I shopped all over Riyadh, by myself, and always felt safe. Everyone loves Dira, the souk, where you can find the most amazing beautiful items, and gold, gold, gold. Arizona compound is another place, more for families, I think, but exquisitely beautiful, moreso than Fal, but quite expensive. Fal has very nice housing, recreation center, little grocery store, is a quite small compound, but has a real family feel, with all the expatriates having fun activities with each other. Good luck! "

" Cara, I would love to get in touch with you to ask some questions about moving to Riyadh (or anyone else out there who can help). My husband and I with 16 month son are to move to Riyadh, I have may concerns, but seem to be reading very positive things. My question is about compounds to start with. Where can I get some information of all compounds and the facilities they offer. I read that some are more family oriented, larger, more british, american etc. Anyone have info of this type? thanks "
