It is my understanding your employer is required to hold your passport. Does this mean its impossible to zip over to the UAE or Bahrain for a change of scenery or is there some other identification/visa process that covers trips to neighbouring countries? I realize it will vary from employer to employer but is getting your passport back for an out of country trip a big hassle? I''ve also read a lot of Americans get duplicate passports so they can keep their departure options open. I''m Canadian & pretty sure duplicate passports aren''t allowed unless you want to lie & say you lost yours. (Pretty suspicious when the whole family arrives at the embassy together!!!) Any comments?

" Yep, you can''t just zip over there for a beer ! You need to get an Exit/Reentry visa in your passport which your employer/sponsor must organise - so I don''t see what good it would be to have a second passport. For most companies, getting your passport back, and getting the exit/reentry visa is not a problem at all, particularly if it is for agreed upon leave - but you do hear about some horror stories of lost passports and sponsors who refuse to cooperate but they are a minority, and your embassy would be able to help in terms of identifying what your options are. Hope this helps "

Also helps if you have a multiple exit and re-entry visa like I do then you can come and go as you please. Problem is that no all employees will give you one. Good luck.
