Hi, My boyfriend is moving to Saudi Arabia for a position in a hospital in Riyahd. His connection states they could get me a secretarial job at the hospital. What are the conditions like for women? Also, he is currently going through a divorce yet it has not been finalized, therefore, one of my main concerns is what kind of problems could I face being in public w/ him. Are the Mutawwah allowed to enter the gated communities? Are the gated compounds considered "public"? Do you think w/ the impending war, there could be restrictions on allowing Americans to enter SA

I wish I could tell you some good things about Riyadh and single females. Yes you will be considered single female if you are not married to this fellow. You have to be very careful on the streets. I don't think they recognize a "Girl friend" status. You could, like you said ,get a job and see him very carefully. Depends on the compound. They can not enter into gated private compounds for American or foreign companies.
Good luck Naila

I lived in Saudi Arabia for 5 years with my wife. We were stationed in Taif for 3 1/2 years and then Jeddah for the last 20 months. My wife was a very independent banker B4 we moved to Saudi. She could NOT adapt to my working long hours sometimes 6 days a week while she only visited with other expat's wives. She could NOT drive, and could NOT even go to the mall alone, and the kicker was about 2 months into my last year she decided she wanted to call it quits. She could not even get her passport from the company I worked for or leave from the Jeddah Airport without a male family member (me) signing for her OK.
It cost us a marriage. All our plans for the future went bust.
Jeddah and Taif are far more "relaxed" than Riyadh. We had people who worked for our company who did get in trouble for just having a dinner with a lady not their spouse in Riyadh. It is the capital, the city with the largest number of secret police and religious police and probably in my mind the most people with unfavorable feelings for American and Brit expats.
There is NO way I would ever go back. I have told my company on several occasions that there is NOT enough money in the world to get me back in country and I feel 100 times as strong about any married female who has to be there and 1,000,000 times as strong for any single female.
Just my opinion which I take very lightly and perhaps you should too.
