Hi - I am a single female heading to Saudi Arabia - KAMC to work. I am a nurse - and have been offered 11,000SAR monthly - with accommodation, airfares, health cover. Can anyone advise me if this is acceptable? What is the social life like in Riyahd? as they have offered accommodation I am assuming it is attached to the hospital? Any advice on living conditions, internet access, banking, diet etc would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

When are you going over? I've accepted a position at KAMC as well but arrive in december. I'm a single aussie too, so if you want to email me to compare notes, my address is stac_mc@yahoo.com.au

Hi, I also work for the Nat. Guard but in the eastern Province. Your salary offer is fairly standard for an Aussie. The NGHA do pay better than many. Of course, the currency exchange is at a record low at the moment and this affects all expats as the Riyal is fixed against the US dollar which is at a record low. I have not worked in Riyadh but know many who have. The embassies are there and, although security is very tight nowadays, the Australian Embassy has regular social gatherings. Working in Saudi is quite a rewarding experience but a cultural shock at first. This is my second tour.

I realised that I did not answer your other questions. Your accommodation may be on the hospital site. However, KAMC - Riyadh is so large that some people are housed in outside compounds also. If the same as other NGHA hospitals there will be a bank branch office at the hospital. It is certainly the case here and in Jeddah. Access to the Internet will not be a problem if you have your own computer. Moreover, there may be limited access at work but usually confined to a central area such as the medical library. Intrenet cafes are available too though not always very accessible. The hospital has a main cafeteria which serves a variety of meals. Riyadh also has a couple of other cafes in the hospital as well. The quality of food is not as good as home but you are free to do your own catering at home in your kitchen.

I am interviewing with helen Ziegler company for a position as a nurse in the ED. What is nursing like in SA? Is your role the same as in your home country. What are the patients like? Do they mind nurses from other countries, like the US. I am a single woman, will I have problems getting around, or traveling? What are the hospitals like? are there supplies, is it "state of the art" like my recruiter is telling me? Any info about being a nurse In SA would be great

Hi ... I have just accepted a position at same place. I am going in August. The salary I have been offered is about 14000 SAR a month. I did not negotiate but i assume i am getting something for working in a specialty area, although I have no certificates just experience. Perhaps it depends on the recruitment agency, I am not sure. Bear in mind however that you are paid according to your nationality, this is what I have been told and it can cause a little bit of agro for some! I dont really know if salary is negotiable, too late for me. I think there are a few bonuses along the way too. When are you going? Where in Aust. are you from? I have also been told it is a bit of luck of the draw as to whether your compond is on the hospital site or a little further away but they do all have similar facilities. Also does anyone have any info regarding arriving when Ramadan starts. I have been in the Middle East during Ramadan but I am not too sure if it is a good time to start a new job, lifestyle etc.

Hi - Well I have made the four month mark in Riyahd. Time has gone fairly fast but thought I should let people know about life here. I was so careful packing, underweight, no prohibited stuff and they didnt even look. You can buy just about anything here, some of it is poor quality and some is the best of the best. Bring favourite shoes for the firsr week because you do a lot of walking. The hospital is on one level and you need to walk to everything. Dont be fooled by a western compound if you are living in the National Guard compounds they do have restrictions. Yes there are swimming pools, which are very popular but there are restrictions on what you wear and times set for single men, families etc. You cant pull on a bikini, wrap a towel over your shoulder and walk to the pool... You can not wear what ever you like, you can not drive a car, you can have a visitor of the opposite sex but be very sure that your housemates agree as they can complain and get you into deep trouble. There are curfews for visitors. The limo service is fairly good but you have to get used to booking in advacne once you get a favourite driver. The power outlets are mainly 110 - so you do have to take electrical power for dummies when you arrive. Dont plug in anything til you know its voltage. The fatalities on the roads are horrendous, so in a way not being able to drive isnt so bad. There is a lot to do socially, many fancy dress parties, embassies functions, contact the embassy before you leave and as soon as you arrive. Make sure you have a mountain of passport photo's and copies of your contract. Read your contract, you will have to do overtime even though they say it isnt compulsary. Shopping is ruined by not be able to try clothes on, there are only male shop assistants so if you are picky about your lingerie buy it at home and bring it with you. Prayer time ruiins shopping, but your get very experienced at getting locked in to some stores for a hassle free shopping experience. Gee I sound grouchy but it is as it seems. Do not expect internet access immediately, paperwork is very frustrating and all you can do is stick with the group you arrive with, be friendly to all and at the end of the day - get out there and live the experience. If you have any special questions my feel free to contact me. lostnalonenow@hotmail.com

I have been in King Faisal for 2 months now and I quite enjoying it. My advise is dont stress and dont expect it to be like Australia. Just go with the flow - things over here take time, but hey, we have time. It took me 2 months to get my igama, but I have got it now so no big deal. People are very nice and friendly and it is the people that make the place.

I'm an American. If you ever got to Riyadh, please let me know your experiences. My wife's a nurse (Filipina), and we are moving to Riyadh in September 2008. I'll teach at a university there. I don't use the forum often, and I don't know if I'm allowed to post my e-mail address here. If I am, please contact me at donald_hendon@yahoo.com. Thanks.

Hi, I am currently a student at the University of Georgia. We are doing a Consulting Project in class on what it would be like for a female nurse going over to Saudi Arabia. It would be VERY helpful if anyone has personal experince or advice on this topic. Thank you!!

Although I am a male, I have just gone through the interview process and after experiencing the intraductions to the job, I have do say my first thoughts on the matter is if you go over with a open mind and respect for the culture, I suspect it could be a very rewarding experience both finacialy and experience wise, the hospitals itself sounds like you could have a wealth of exposure to some good old nursing and care, think if you went over there with a totally western mind, you might not get the whole experience on other!
