Anti-Depressants

I'm moving to Riyadh next week and I have not been able to find much information about what I can or can't get at Saudi pharmacies.

I read somewhere that antidepressants are not legal anymore. True? How would I find the information?

I don't know where you heard that anti-depressants are illegal. Most things are available here on prescription and many things that you would not expect are available over the counter. You may be required to see a specialist for the prescription but bring a few month's supply anyway.

Not only can you get most of them in Saudi you can get them over the counter, as well as antibiotics, contraceptive pill, asthma medications etc. Give us the name of the drug and I'll see if you need a script. They have no problem with you bring your meds into the country (unless you bring a massive amount) further to that the drugs are sooo much cheaper here and if working for a hospital they write the script and they are free.

I'll be moving to Riyadh beginning of next year. I take thyroxine. Is that only on prescription in Saudi and should I take a supply with me or is it easy to get hold of.

I will be moving to Riyaadh in a few months. Please advise if I will be able to get Fluoxitine and Serequel over the counter, or do i need a script. These are my chronic meds. I will bring a few month supply along. I hope i won't experience any problems bringing it into the country.

Thanks

I have been told that I cannot get a nursing job in Saudi if I am on antidepressants. If I don,t declare to an employer that intake antidepressants- can I get a supply in Saudi or can I take them into the country in my suitcase?
Any advice I would be very grateful Fitz...

You may not declare that you ate on antidepressants but your doctor will. Hospitals will send you a large questionaaire that has to be signed by your doctor and then has to be sent off to the embassy to be stamped to say that the person who signed the form is a verified doctor.

I know nurses here who did not have antidepressants documented on their medical application and just brought a year supply and every time they go home to visit they bring enough to last another yr.

U can get antidepressants here but they are from China/India and are useless. There is a terrible stigma attached to women's mental health. Better your hospital doesn't know.

Both nurses had made sure the doctor who completed the physical either weren't told about the SSRIs or agreed to leave it out. The KSA authorities only look into if the MD is licensed and in good standing. When u get here u will probably have a quick physical by their MD but again if u don't tell anyone there is no one who will know what drugs u take.
If u want to talk further why don't u send a private conversation message on this site?
