I am planning to move to Taif where my husband is based hopefully in May this year. I know i have to wear the abaya in public but i'm not sure if my 8 year old daughter will have to wear it or not when out of the compound. Can anyone please enlighten me. Thanks

Like u say, you must wear abaye, but you dont need to cover your head, only if you want to. Your dauther dont need to wear abaye, you will see girls youger than yours wearing it, but depends on you.

Thank you for your reply. My husband said because i have blonde hair i will have to cover up my head... what is your take on that? My husband informed me that a lot of women don't cover their heads but they all have dark hair he thinks that having blonde hair not covered i will stand out too much. Once again thank you for your reply.

You may not have to cover your hair. I found that there are some areas that it is just easier to cover as everybody will stare. When I visit Taif I noticed that it appeared more "old world" not like Riyadh and Jeddah - so they may follow the old laws closer and yet Riyadh can be very strict. As for your daughter no she does not have to wear the abaya yet - a lot of the little Saudi girls wear them as they want to look ike their mum. If you are in a Souq or market area - you are better to cover your hair. My girlfriend and I were assaulted in a souq in Riyadh and I was fully covered, so remember not to go out without your husband unless to a large shopping mall. Even then take a expat friend, do not seperate from her and be careful.

You are not obliged to cover your head but blonde hair can cause stares. Some people get around this by wearing a small hat or cap or just a small triangular scarf.

No, they do not HAVE to wear an abaya. Many girls younger will wear them. Many girls older, won't. It is up to you. She definitely dos not have to. But frankly. It is easier to wear one. There are many very cute little girl abayas online that your daughter is sure to love -- unless she gets the message that she shouldn't like wearing them. For you, for sure you should cover your hair unless you are one of those "in your face" type people who needs to make some kind of point. Truth is blonde, head uncovered a lot of ignorant assumptions will be made about you. And yes, people will gawk.

Please remember, there are many many ignorant people everywhere. And in Saudi, you see all the efforts made to by Saudis and Westerners to separate themselves from one another. Stereotypes, discrimination and ignorance flourish in such an environment.

Hi, I never cover my hair but always carry a scarf. Only once have i been stopped by muttawa and they were polite and discrete when asking me to cover my hair, This was in Kingdom Mall. I have been out with and seen other blonde women without a scarf on plenty of times. In both malls and in markets. My understanding of girls and abayas is that they are s'posed to wear one when they hit puberty so i would guess this would really be at your discretion. And what the girls look like - if they are going to attract unwated attention, best to cover up - a friends girl is 10 and wears one when she feels like it.
