Hello Everyone!!! I am a Muslim African American Registered Nurse working in the Detroit area looking into working in Jeddah for 1-2 yrs. I have contacted an agency working for the King Faisal Hospital and the opportunity sounds great but I have some concerns. Does anyone know about the working conditions there? Also does anyone know about the living/entertainment arrangement for the Amoudia Compound? The pictures look great, but you can not always tell from that. Anyone with any comments or advice is welcome to contact here on this forum or Kay2053@aol.com. Thanks

Some people really like it. If you are Muslim then it will be much easier for you- you will not miss the wild parties! It is a proper job with a kosher instituition. The compound is a bit stuck out and it costs a bit for transport to ex-pat events. However if you are strict you would not want those anyway.
I hope you do not mind me mentioning this but I rhink it is importnat when making your decision. Be aware that their is still some racism ( which I find horendous) across here. Not amoungst your brit or amercian collegues but in society in general. Do not be suprised if you mistaken for a maid ( eritrean/ ethopian are common.) My freind has a japanese and a Malay wife and they found that hard as they were mistaken for Philipinos. There is a pecking order 1. Saudis 2. White westerners ( they assume you will not be american if you black) 3. other arab natuibalities 4. philipinos 5. aficans 6. Pakistanis/ indonesions 7. banglasdeshis
This may seem horrendous for me to even write about this- but this is the most racist society I have ever encountered. - It will not affect your work. What I find even stranger is that some of the nationalities that are treated like sh-- are Muslims and therefore should be brothers.
I am sure the job will be fine. reserach well on this site and others. I do know personally several people who have been quite happy at King Faisal. bad shifts at times though.
You will be able to make Umrah, and enjoy a really good Muslim lifestyle. Ramadan working hours, eid holidays etc. you are always given time to pray. So if you want to develop your spiritual life then that is good. But be aware if you are not going to use the beaches, party, dive etc there is not much to do. One of my strict muslim freinds does attend arabic and Koran school three nights a week and she is very happy. Does her job, keeps herself to herself and finds intersteing intellectual pursuits.
Depends totally what you want out of this experince.

Hello!
I am a muslim working in the Dearborn area of michigan. I am also truly considering working in Jeddah. If I do so, my goal would to start work by mid june. I am still researching different hospitals in jeddah, King Faisal and King Fahd Abdelazziz in Jeddah seem to be both reasonable. I would be bringing both my sons and spouse with me. So there is a lot of things to consider, from housing, school to trasnportation. I want to make sure i sign up for a decent hospital that is diverse, friendly and welcoming. I also want nice housing (preferrably villa for my family-if possible). Are schools paid for? Id like american or british based schools, with islamic classes if possible. Diffferent websites have given different salaries. Id like to know what is the salary of an american nurse. I did hear that there is profiling when it comes to salary amount. In my case what would be the salary for an arab-american RN in Jeddah? If anyone can help with any information - id appreciate it!!!!

Hey Kay 2053! Its nice to know u work in the detroit area! I am also thinking wbout moving to Jedday. I havent spoken to a recruitment company, I will soon though. My brother worked in the UAE and he really enjoyed working there but the cost of living was very expensive!. That is not the case in Saudia Arabia, however it much more stricter there. There are many more pros than cons based on my research thus far. If u do go please let me know how it turns out. I wish you the best. Maybe we can meet up there! jazakallah khair

Hi there.. I am a canadian nurse working in King Fahad Abdulaziz (National Guard) Hospital in Jeddah. I agree with everything Jeddlag had said in reply about racisim and lifestyle. I am leaving in less than a month. I have been here for one year and that is more than enough for me. I have to warn you about King Fahad Abdulaziz Hospital. Although the salary is ok, and the hospital appears great on paper, it is a nightmare. Alot of my friends are way more happier at King Faisal even if the salary is a little bit lower. Nurses and the like are leaving my hospital in groves for many reasons. Majority being the hypocrisy of the hospital between pollicy and procedures that they demand you follow but then dont give you the tools/time/staff etc to do so. They care more about how they appear than how they actually are. This hospital prides itself on reflecting the american/canadian standards but dont be fooled. They dont know the first thing about what it all actually means. The level of practice that you see is substandard to say the least and coming from America you will be shocked as I was. The arab mentality is very tough to take. So besides this and the racisism...if you think you and your family will be happy here then I wish you luck. It is not a world that I would ever subject my children to, muslim or not. Not to mention you take your life in your hands every time you get in a car and go anywhere. There is no respect for life on the road and I dont know if it is out of ignorance or arrogance on the part of the Saudi male drivers. I am assuming both. King Fahad Abdulaziz is 45 mins to one hour drive away from Jeddah proper and there is nothing around the hospital. The compound for this hospital is dead and drab with nothing to do. Not to mention the accomodations are very depressing. I have been in my friends compounds for other hospitals and they are much better. Better yet would be to use your housing allowance and find your own compound accomodations at a place that is atleast livable. It will be a hard adjustment for your children to live here and having a decent compound would be there only saving grace. Once they reach there teens life is very supressing for them and having a good pool and activities atleast gives them an outlet. I wish you luck and I hope you really think about such a drastic move for your family. It is the most strictest and restrictive life here for a family muslim or non muslim. The country has along way to go before it will ever reach a desirable place to live.

hey amy, unfortunately there is no way for us 2 bring our husbands/kids. These benefits only are for the employee not their families. they will not allow u 2 have your family live with u in the expat housing. Unless u get an administrative or doctor position they are not included in the contract. This is why i will no longer be leaving. they say its because of expenses. Its unfortunate because many people are not able to go. One option u have is if somehow your husband can find a job there other than nursing, many factories, teaching jobs, etc allow husbands 2 bring their families. Hope this helps. Good luck!
