Hi. Was wondering if anybody has brought a dog to Saudi Arabia? I just signed a 2year contract, and I want to bring my dog with me. Any suggestions?

As I understand it, there are only two types of dogs that expatriates can bring into the Kingdom: Hunting Dogs and Guard Dogs. Depending on the breed, this might present a problem.

Check out this link, though I can't confirm how current or accurate it is, and also just Google the topic.

However, you'll want to confirm that your housing accomodations will allow pets, that there is a place to walk and poop your dog, etc. Saudi Arabia isn't a very dog-friendly place unless you're in a compound with a lot of open space, and certainly not if you're in an apartment or hotel.

Check with your employer first - this may not even be a possibility, especially if you're here on single status and non-compound accomodations.

Good luck,
Rob

I left saudi in June last year after spending two trip there (March 1998 - Oct 2002) and (Nov 2008 - June 2010). It all depends on what breed of dog you want to import and what time of year (due to adverse weather (Heat)). It is pretty straight forward but you will need someone on the Saudi side to go to the department of agriculture for you to get the import permit. My husband entered the kingdom prior to me so was able to get the papers for me. If you dont have anyone in kingdom to do the papers for you my suggestion is that you enter kingdom (minus your dog), get the neccessary permit and then have a relative or friend from home get the paperwork done thier.. .And then send your animal. It would help if i knew what country you are intending to fly from, I have flown dogs from both the UK and the USA and there is alot of issues to get sorted prior to shipment but it is simple if you have everything organised prior to starting the process.. I have a contact in the department of agriculture in the Eastern Province of Saudi who could definatley help with a DOA contact in Rhiyad. Reply back or email at: respetter@hotmail.com

It is definitely possible to bring a dog to Saudi, but you will need someone to help with the paperwork/Ministry of Agriculture. It would probably be easier to sort out the paperwork, and then bring the dog on your next trip home. A good vet might be able to help you with the paperwork. We sometimes take our dog home for the summer, and our vet sorts out the paperwork.

If you are only going to be here for two years, you might want to find out what you'll need to do in order to take your dog home at the end of two years. Many countries require six months quarantine.

If you are staying in a western compound walking the dog will not be an issue. There are tons of pet dogs here, despite the taboo.

Good luck!
