There is no foundation to this belief. Air conditioners are designed to be used in both modes.

We have used our air conditioner for both hot and cold weather and are still here to tell the tale. We have not suffered any ill health in any way. As long as your machines are serviced at regular intervals and maintained there is no problem. As has already been mentioned the air con systems are designed to be used for cooling and heating. GE will not commit, probably, so as not to be considered liable for any possible future health issues. Some people also believe that after you have ironed you shouldn't open a refrigerator because that could cause TB - another misconception!
I am presuming that you are off sound body and mind otherwise you won't pass the medical for your visa/igama in any case.
