Hi I am from Southern California and MAT TESOL(graduate) candidate at University of Southern California.I will be relocating to Taif,KSA next week to teach ESL at English language Center there.However,there is a problem concerning continuing my education there through USC' virtual long distance learning classrooms ,especially when it comes to recording my fieldwork for the courses:Observations and recording myself or another teacher teaching English and showing the students' faces.My question is ,is recording students interacting in class totallly forbidden in kSA or is it only acceptable in American,British,or international schools on American or british compound grounds? if it is allowed in these schools can someone give me the name of these schools asap! Am I allowed to live on their compound (or air base apartments), even if I work for a different educational institute that is not in their area?I really need your help with this! because continuing my education is a priority,but I don't want to lose the job I am offered either!

I've been in Saudi for about 5 weeks now. I teach at the medical college.
Saudi is a very private culture and taking photographs and videos of students in a classroom situation is NOT APPROPRIATE, in particular in grade schools as they are minors.
From the email I am assuming you are teaching in grade schools so you might want to make sure it is possible to record no matter which schools they are.
My gut feeling is it is not possible but you might want to get a special permission from the parents as well as the school system or Ministry of Education.
I strongly advise not to assume anything.... or expect things to move fast ... think before you carry on with your assignment in Saudi.
Regarding your living arrangements, can you be more clear on what exactly you want to do so I can help?

Hi,thank you for your response.I will be teaching at a language institute there but I won't be able to do my recording for my MA TESOL coursework at the center !That is why they told me to ask international schools if they will let me do my observations and recordings for my assignments at their site,even if I work at a different company!

As for my arrangements can I live on an American or British compound or Air base compounds in order to get access to the schools at which I will be doing my fieldwork ,even though I will be teaching with a different company in Taif?

The compounds are for people who are recruited by companies because companies book those family villas for their employees. Usually there is a waiting list. A far as I know compound living is not open to other public. If your recruiting company has some under their name, you will have to ask them.
Also, if you are single, it is difficult because the majority are catered to the families. Also, single family units are expensive compared to outside apartment living.
It all depends what your recruiting company has set up for you. You need to go through them.
Regarding your classroom recordings, do you have a list of International schools? I googled and found several schools. If you need further help, let me know.

Hi,
Thank you for the valuable info.Unfortunately,I don't have a list of schools if you have them please send them to me.I hope the schools are in Taif at least because this is where I will be teaching!
As for apartments withing Western Compound on air base compounds my company told me to contact these compounds because they don't have any under their names.So,yes if you have further info that can be useful please forward them to me.
