Hi, we are considering moving to Saudi next year-ish depending on business and oil and gas. We are coming from Texas. As an expat wife I would like to know what activities and things there are to do in the compounds and outside the compounds. Are there golf courses, tennis courts or anything that is athletic with groups of people to socialize with? Are there limitations to online content? For example I am considering taking some online courses. To what extent is it limited? How do you manage staying involved in a community and battle the potential of boredom? I would be leaving a career to move to Saudi. Are there others who have done that? If so, what is it like? Just wondering what the environment inside a compound.

StrongJ, my wife is in the same boat. We are looking to relocate to Eastern Saudi Arabia end of the fourth quarter or the first quarter of 2017. Also, a lot depends on the oil and gas as well. Like you we are from Texas, Humble area. She is doing a lot of research as am I. Best advice I can offer at this point is welcome it with an open mind. She is leaving her career also. Our son of 12 years old will be going with us. As for the compound, everything depends on the "Expat Contract" that will be offered and if the company has a contract with a specific compound or if you will be looking outside. We will go ahead of time to look around and see what our options are.

Hi everyone.
I am Italian and I live in Khobar since two years ago with my family and two young sons (5&4). Let me say that for a family is a nice place: there's everything kids may need or want and locals are kind and forgiving towards westerns. Most of the time they are curious. Women lifestyle is to be adated to new environment. No driving and outer black abaya to put on everything are mandatory. Most of activities happen in compunds that offer a variety of possibilities.
You have to carefully screen all possible locations before accepting.
For us an experience to try for sure (if business allows)
