I am actually looking for a residential compound in Jubail, however I drove over the Taif mountains in August 1992. The altitude meant I had to put a jumper on! I remember a morning mist and a scattering of villas of privileged Saudis able to have a summer retreat in the cool of the mountains. There is/was a large hospital there that does/did employ expatriate workers - so there may be some expat residentiual compounds. I am finding they are expensive compared to single dwellings - but the facilities and 'enclosed nature' make it worth while. Expat compunds are a bit of a parallel universe compared to normal Saudi life under strict Wahabism Muslim law. Women do not have to wear an abbaya in the compounds and can swim in a swim suit rather than in 'overalls'.

There are a few compounds in the Taif area however even living in a provate renetd house is not as bad as people make it out to be. The area is relatively safe and theirs not many issues.
The compounds in Taif to look at are Al-Wadia and Al-Game which are common for Expats.
