Lover's in bind.

I'm American with one teenage son and my future husband is Scottish with one teenage son (joint custody with his ex-wife). I'm trying to get to Scotland to be with him.

I'm guessing this isn't a new topic in this forum. (heehee)

We are completely beside ourselves with the immigration requirements and need help. Neither one of us is 'rich' enough to qualify for the income requirements stated for the Spouse visa or Fiancé visa. We're not married yet.

I'm willing to apply for a Work Visa instead if someone was willing to hire me. I just need to get my foot in the door and my fiancé and I will work our our hearts out making this happen. We just want to be together but system is designed to keep us apart.

I'm also under a huge time crunch as well. Life has forced me to expedite this process.

Any good advice or assistance is greatly appreciated.

~Yvonne

Hello - my husband and I have been in a similar situation this past year with UK immigration. Sadly if you're aiming for a fiance or partner visa there is no way around the financial requirements - you said you're in a time crunch, but sadly this process doesn't allow many quick answers, so you probably need to start planning long term - read the UKBA site and various guidelines VERY thoroughly. The good news in this process is that you do have the ability to visit fairly freely as an American "tourist", and if you get married you also have access to the Family Visitor Visa which would allow you to visit up to 6 months (that's what we did). If none of these options are viable for you, I would suggest looking into a work visa, since you can transition from a work visa to a settlement visa when you get married - only certain jobs qualify for visas, however, so I'd suggest looking in whatever field you're qualified in and/or inquiring through any contacts your partner may have. I wish I had more good news for you, but our experience was that its much better to dig in and do things the right way first time - we had a denied application that not only cost us over $1000 but several extra months apart as well. Its a long process, but we're very thankful for the security and peace of mind we have now at the other end. Pray all goes well for you as you navigate the system!

hi Yvonne,

I definitely feel for you guys. I just got my fiancee visa and moving to Glasgow on the 16th. But this has not been easy. I suggest you go onto the Expat Forum http://www.expatforum.com/expats/britain-expat-forum-expats-living-uk/ and go onto the Britain forum page. They are very helpful, you can post your question and people will reply to you. The forum is mostly for people in fiancee/marriage situations. I don't know anything about getting a work visa other than it's probably next to impossible. Good luck to you!

Sorry but the news is not good. Unless U'r fiance earns over 18,000, its a no, I think U already know this. There R 2 cases that say how hard it is. 1)an American guy,a principal/teacher in a small village he has been married 2 a Scottish woman I think 4, 6-10 yrs 2 this point he has had visas 2 work & I guess they'r not renewing, he has been told he needs 2 leave, its ridiculous, how can they say a marriage that long is a sham & he has had many people speak up 4 him & that he's need in his job.Another is the story of a lovely young lady who even had a part on the TV series "George Gently", she is a great singer & actress, tho she was just on 1 episode. She had recently married an singer/artist but he didn't make the 18thou, she had a job as a real estate agent @ 26thou, but they said the citizen had 2 make 18thou & she was from a commonwealth country Australia & had great potential w/her singing & acting, wish I could remember her name. It isn't fair they let in people from the EU, who then claim benefits.
