Chicken or egg?

I will be moving to Glasgow beginning next year. My daughter is to start primary school on 15th of August.

The question is:
Do I first select a place to live in a nice neighborhood and then look for a school or better I pick up good primary school and then select a home in this school's catchment area?

Thank you.

Generally your child will go to the catchment primary school and later the catchment secondary school. But if you do not live in the school's catchment area then you can make a placement request to the school of your choice - but there is no guarantee you will get a place.

For good schools in popular areas you will find there is little chance of a placing request (for non-catchment school) being successful. And in some cases for these popular schools they may even be short of places for children in the catchment area.

So, the best technique is to first identify the best performing SECONDARY schools in the area, then find out which PRIMARY schools feed into this Secondary school. Some of these Primary schools will be better than others. Then identify the catchment areas for these Primary schools - there will be lists of the streets in each catchment. Then look for a home in these streets. Simple? The catch is that the best schools are often in the most expensive areas - because the house prices are higher near the best schools due to demand from parents wanting the best schooling for their children, naturally.

When are you moving to Glasgow? You really want to get your child’s application in as early as possible. The primary schools may start compiling their list of Primary 1 children in January 2016 for August 2016 entry (I think some have started already). The schools try to keep places for people moving to the are later in the year, but can’t guarantee a place. The local education authority will always find a place in a school for your child but it doesn’t have to be the nearest school.

I hope that helps!

Thank you for the prompt answer.

>> When are you moving to Glasgow?

I will be landing on 20th of January, but my wife will arrive on 26th of March and the little girl maybe 2-3 weeks later (it turns out guest houses don't accommodate children).

If I understand correctly nothing could be arranged while I am out of the country, is that correct?

(I was unable to set up bank account online, and letting agents never returned e-mails)

As for neighborhoods - I am planning to spend no more than 1200 GBP per month council tax included - don't know how reasonable this is ;(

Before you arrive you can speak to the schools in your preferred areas and possibly arrange school visits for when you are here. However most of the schools will be on holiday very soon until the first week in January.

The letting agents will mostly not rent to anyone who has not viewed the property - they don't want problems when the tenant turns up and decides they don't like they property after all.

Because of the current popularity of rental property and the shortage of good properties I think most of the letting agents don't need to respond to emails. It's better to phone them to see what they really have available. Only use the property portals as a guide to what might be available - often the adverts there are not up to date.

Depending on what you are looking for then 1200GBP could be sufficient. Coincidentally I have a client moving into a 4 bedroom house in Clarkston (south Glasgow suburb) where his monthly costs for rent and council tax will be a few pounds short of 1200 GBP. However most 4 bedroom properties in this area are usually higher rental than this.

This is latest development as for my daughter primary School.

It turned out the one we liked most is full. Now we are put on a waiting list and told that no action from our part is necessary until some unknown time in the future.

15th of August closing I wonder should we contact council already or wait?

Thank you for your previous help.

I am now four months in Scotland and enjoying every minute of it.

And they were telling me the weather is not nice ;)

You probably will just have to wait unfortunately. However as the school term will finish around end of June / beginning of July (check in your area), it would be a good idea to contact the council again before the school term ends. If they still ask youth wait, then ask if they can give you a date when you should expect a response.

The council is duty bound to provide a place for your child in one of their schools so she will get a school place if not in your ideal school - and you can still ask to remain on the waiting list so she can move to the ideal school when a place becomes available.

Good luck!

Oh, and regarding the weather, don't tell everyone it's not too bad, or they will all want to come here ;-)

Sorry, "youth wait" was meant to read "you to wait" - that's my Mac guessing wrongly what I was trying to type.
