" schools in singapore.. My family, american, is debating a move to singapore. Our only question is the schools (two grade school children). I was a tokyo expat during the 1980''s and have no qualms, except for schools, about expat life in Singapore. Is there a choice of international schools? Is the Singapore American School open to enrollment? Is it difficult to obtain slots? Is there a range of tuitions? Thank you... "

" John, I just moved back to the US with my family after 10 years in Singapore. It has a GREAT American school, but is difficult to get into. But if you work for an American firm and are all US citizens, you will have priority. Have your Company there check it out for you before you decide . . or depart. If you want to chat about more info, happy to answer any questions. Just write away or call me at: (407) 560-3716. Best, Brandt "

" I have lived in Singapore for 2 years. It is a nice place to be. I have 2 boys, 7 and 9. They are in international schools, but not the American School. I found (as did many I know) that the American school is too American and that many of the other International schools are more International. Also, the American school has a reputation for not working very well with children who are having any problems academically. They have been known to kick kids out in the 2nd grade for not doing well. They are very concerned with G.P.A.''s and their ""reputation"". I would take a look at United World College locally refered to as UWC. It is for children from K-12. Excellent reputaion. Also, I''ve heard many good things about the Canadian School. There is also the Overseas Family School, ISS, Chatsworth, Dover Court, The Australian School, Tanglin (British, and others. Good luck. I''m sure you will find a school to fit your children and you will probably love it here as do most of us. "

" That''s great information on SAS; in regards to some of the other schools mentioned, what would a tuition range be for early grade school? Is transport provided for most schools? What sports do most of the children play? Do most of the schools have pools/swimming programs? Thanks... John McGivney "

" Jan Mumenthaler - 02:01pm Jul 26, 1999 Moving Tips to Singapore? Dear Sara & Expat Friends, Very interesting note on Singapore schools. We are currently considering moving from Hong Kong to Singapore and schooling is of major concern as our son has special needs (SI). Would anybody on this list be able to direct us to some good schools who really care about those guys who need a little extra assistance? The other connected question is with regard to Occupational Therapy. Any addresses there? Our children also suffer from asthma and we would like to know whether anybody has made any experience with this in Singapore. Any specialist doctors there? We would be happy to reciprocate with this information should anybody want to know more about Hong Kong. Best regards, Agata & Jan P. Mumenthaler "

" Hi John, Go to the US State Department Website and browse under ""Overseas Living"", choose Singapore and it will show you the Singapore American School. I must tell you that my wife, a native Singaporean, and I recently returned from the island. It was my first time to visit. I was impressed with the schools, public and private, but Singapore American and Raffles tops out. They are simply the best. We are likewise considering a move to Singapore. I have inquired as to staff requirements for SAS, but not student enrollment eligibility. Check it out. See what you think. Good luck. Oh, by the way, the Amercian ""teens"" I saw in Singapore really are taken in by the locals and seem to enjoy their stay. I know I did. Good luck, Corey D. Welch "

" Corey, Best to do some job investigation prior to arrival although you may have better chances of finding a job once in Singapore. You time may be limited because immigration decides at entry whether to allot you a 2 weeks to one month stay. Is your wife still a Singaporean national? If so, as a woman she can now sponsor her husband. This ruling is very recent. If she has become an American citizen than she is subject to the same social visit status as you are. Once you find an employer to sponsor you, the employer will apply for an employment pass on your behalf. You may wish to check out this website www.jobsdb.com - Also check out the American Association website www.aasingapore.com In regards to housing, Singapore is quite costly in comparison to the States especially if you wish to live in the private sector. Jurong Town Corportaion has a Scheme for Housing of Foreign Talent. Check out this website www.jtc.gov.sg/shift.html Good luck, Nani Asia Transitions 25 C Lorong Liput Holland Village Singapore 277735 Tel (65) 4667177 Fax (65) 4661714 "

" Sara, We are considering a move to Singapore, but are very concerned that one of our sons, who is dyslexic, would not have his needs met at school there. Your old message mentions the American school putting too much emphasis on GPA success. Is that still the case? Should we be investigating other schools, which I didn''t even know was an option? Many thanks, Cindy Thane "

" Singapore schools We have been here 3 mos and our son(8) attends the Overseas Family School. We looked at SAS as well as others but settled on OFS for the real international experience. It has a wonderful mix of 78 nationalities and in my sons class of 17 kids there are two Americans one being him and the other being a child whose parents are from India. The class structure in primary is amazing as the school follows the International Bacculaurate Program thus the kids have a homebase teacher then ""travel"" to other teachers for reading and math. It is a terrific way of ""sifting"" kids according to their needs without them knowing it. Even P.E. is amazingly well done with the kids haveing a swimming extravaganza and sports day where they have fun and compete but in a supportive, collabrative way. One of the other unique aspects of school is that the kids work as teams writing their own plays, researching topics and then teach the other classes at their level. School also has monthly presentations to both parents and other students. They also start a second language in first grade and its for 30 mins daily rather than weekly starting in junior high like the American school. I just can''t speak highly enough of the school. Its been an amazing experience for our son. He has gone from additon and subtraction at home in the states to completing multiplication, division, fractions here in the last 3 mos. good luck!~! It''s a great place to hang out for a couple of years.......nikki "
