Accommodation Options In Singapore

Dear Singaporeans,

I have just been offered a new job in Singapore and would like information and feedback on:

1. The different types of accommodation available, and
2. What are the recommended areas to live in on my budget.

Is it true that prices quotes in classifieds are 30% to 50% above the real rental price?

For reference, I am a 33yr old Irish national currently living in Beijing, China. I am going to be working in the advertising sector based in Boat Quay. I am single and would like to live in a 2-bedroomed fully furnished apartment with a budget of SGD2,000-SGD2,500/month.

Can I get a place in a condominium with pool and gym for this rate?

I am happy to live 15-20mins away from Boat Quay, but the area should be convenient for MRT/public transport and supermarkets, as I won;t have a car.

Any ideas and suggestions provided would be greatly appreciated.

There are two type of accommodations you can consider:

1.HDB Government housing means no facilities with cheaper rental
2.Private condo with full condo facilities e.g. Pool, tennis court, children playground. Fitness station, BBQ pits....etc.

I do not know how true is it the prices quotes in classifieds are 30 to 50% above the real price, but i know you can always negotiate with agents or owners if you are interested in their units.

With $2500 - $2800 should be ok to get a 2 bedrooms apartment but it depends on the location. If you have not found an apartment yet and you are still looking for one..pls contact me on 65-94571815 or email me shuyui25@hotmail.com

Cheers,
SY Lim

Hmm it's a bit hard for you to look up those price ranges that you quoted. We lived in Beijing for a couple of years. Just recently moved down here for a month. We were quite surprise and still now with singapore rental prices.. Finally we have to increase our budget to SGD $3,200 per month fully furnish (dodgy quality furniture - worst than Ikea). And we got 2 bdr condo at Paya Lebar (east coast side) about 7 stops away from our office at Tanjong Pagar MRT station. Which is that is good for Singaporean. We have so being spoiled lived in Beijing. Everything is a walking distance and taxi with NO EXTRAS COST!! Here normally with EXTRA COST which added up to min. SGD$15 for less than 15mins taxi ride. Anyway, G'd luck! look up these websites for your references www.PropertyGuru.Com.Sg, www.singaporeexpats.com ... FYI - make sure is walking distance less than 10 mins away from MRT station.. it's bloody hot here..

All the best

Cheers,

Meg

You are right you will not have a car. It is around 70,000.00 USD to get a car and the required permits into spore. I paid 4,800.00 USD for a 4 room, yes room, unfurnished apartment close to the airport. That was 4 years ago and I don't remember anything being in that price reange at all. I was paid 275,000 usd to live there and would have ask for 400,000.00 had I known the cost of living was so outrageous.
