Hi
At the moment myself and my husband live in the UK. I have family in Kempton Park, we are thinking of running a lodge or guesthouse in Marloth Park, mpumalanga but i am just a bit concerned about safety I have read so much negative news about people being attacked in their homes, can anyone offer any advice? Or is anyone in the same business.

Maureen

The gov't has recently published some stats on crime. How accurate? who knows? but they seem to be sayin they have curbed it but don't know how to improve on things dramatically. The Cape is probably safer, with little towns like Greyton being even safer. Steer clear of the big cities; CT, Jo'burg, Durban. It's not as bad as some make out.

Hi mouse
I lived in Mpumulanga up until 1997. House break ins are uncommon, car thefts are common. A lodge inside a game reserve is fine - as you're protected. A lodge out in the bush is not a good idea unless you are fully electic fenced or have hired security. The hotel we were running got broken into occassionally and our sister hotel in the local village had car thefts until the owners put in gates and a full time night guard

The crime is worst in JHB. Cape Towm and Durban make strenous efforts to guard their tourists. Tourists are easy targets as they are very obvious. SA is not a very safe country but if you remain alert, don't drive excessively at night and ensure that your premises and home are alarmed and burgular-barred - we also keep dogs and ensure that our housekeeper sleeps in our home when we are away- you will be able to live here
