Hi
If anyone could help with advice I would be most grateful.
My wife and I are UK citizens hoping to work and live in South Africa.
I am a Graphic Designer, my wife works in Advertising Sales.
Does anyone know what the job prospects would be for 2 Brits coming to work in SA.
My wife has an Uncle and some Cousins in SA.

Any guidence is appreciated

I am a US citizen living in SA, and it is a beautiful country to live and work in. The job market is extremely tight. However, a lot of people have left the country and there is a need for many skilled professional, e.g., nurses. The key to living here, however, is getting the residency/work permit. My suggestion to you is that you go the website of the Dept. of Home Affairs to look at the new legislation for obtaining the work permit you will need. As it relates to obtaining a job, you can contact an employment agency, such a Diane Laing, and they may be able to assist. The are located in Johannesburg and their phone number is 011.467.3900. Good Luck!!!

Cyndi -
Would it be possible for you to give me some details on your move to South Africa? You are the only US citizen living there that I have found in any of these forums.

I am interested in moving to RSA as soon as possible and would like to know what all is involved.

Thanks!

Hi Graham

I have been working as a graphic designer in SA for 10 years. I am now living in Australia. In SA job prospects are tight. There are some strict affirmative action laws, but in our industry it's not as bad. The industry is small and if you have a hot portfolio from the UK. You shouldn't have too much of a problem. A lot of people have left SA. In adverttising it shouldn't be too bad, depending on what role she is in Sales. There are quite a few Accounts positions. As all of the multi national agencies are there. and their ad standards is pretty high compared to Australia. You should try bizcommunity.com.(or za?) . there is quite a few job listings in our industry.

There are 2 major cities in our industry.. Cape Town or JHB. Don't even think of other areas!. If I was you, I'll go to CT.. JHB is not a easy city if you don't have a car. However the salary in JHB is about 15% less than CT. In Ct it's more lifestyle.. you have the beach and great weather etc.

Good luck!

M
