My husband and I are moving to South Africa (just north of Johannesburg) from Canada in January 2008.
I'm bouncing back and forth between feeling excited and a little terrified!! I'm a country girl who has always lived in wide open spaces and on the waterfront, where we could just open the door up to let the dogs out and/or enjoy our morning tea on the dock.
This will be my first city-living experience.
Can you tell me whether there are any organized events or gatherings where I (we) could meet people!? Although work will keep us both pretty busy, we'll be anxious to make new friends and get out of the house from time to time!!!
Sure hope to hear from others who have had similar experiences!
Thanks, Shelley

Dear Shelley, South Africa is a great country I have been living here for a number of years and Johannesburg is a very exciting city!!! Do not worry!!! South African are very friendly people and easy to approach. Our standard of living is second to none in the world. The weather in Johannesburg is bliss and specially when you come from Canada you are really going to appreciate the sunshine. I did spend a year in Saskatoon and it made me very home sick. My name is Erick if you need any assitance do not hesitate in contacting me, my cell is 074 117 2885 . My step sister is Canadian. regards from a very proud South African.

Hi Erick,
Thanks for your response. I don't think to check this forum very often, so it was nice to find a response from someone!! I just returned to my office here in Sudbury, Ontario yesterday after a rushed, week-long house-hunting trip in SA. What an experience!
We found a lovely home in a secure community and I am very excited about moving there in January.
We took friday and saturday to visit Pilanisberg (sp?) game park and I loved every minute of it!
Many people have told me that I am going to love SA and the weather... but I actually think that the weather is going to be one of my biggest challenges! I'm quite attached to my 'seasons' and to all of the wonderful outdoor activities we enjoy in the snow. For it to be esentially what I call "summer" all year round, is going to be difficult for me.
That said, I was pleasantly surprised by how clean and modern the whole Sandton area was. The people seemed very friendly (a little too friendly in a couple of cases)... and I am very much looking forward to the experience!
Anyways... it's always nice to meet new people and I look forward to making new friends in SA!!! Thanks again for your reply!! Hopefully we'll have the oportuntiy to chat some more another time!?!?
THanks, Shelley

Hi Shelley, I am also a North American born expat (from outside NYC) living in SA for the past 2 years. It is a wonderful country and you might be surprised that although the snow falls only in the mountainous regions, it does get fairly cold here. My seasonal confusion comes into play more when the December holiday season falls at a time when people gather outdoors and braai (BBQ) rather then warm up next to a fire with snow falling outside. I would love to be in touch with you - am traveling to the US in the month of Feb, but back in SA from early March on. Best of luck with your move and adjustment to the wonders that this country has to offer. Nancy
