We are a family with 3 small kids- aged 9, 6, and 3. What areas are good to look at to live for 3-6 months in July next year outside of the city? Any areas to avoid?

Hi and firstly, dont be afraid to come to our beautiful country. Are you moving to Johannesburg? If you are, I have children that are just about the same age and we stay outside of the city. There is a wonderful suburb called Dainfern in the northern suburbs of Johannesburg. It is a very secure estate, which has state of the art security, a school, golf course and all kinds of other amenities. It also depends on whether you are coming for a holiday, or whether you will be working. If you are working in the Sandton area, its quite a drive and then maybe you should consider an apartment. There are beautiful apartments at the Emperor in Sandton. They have a biometric security system, gym facilites, spa and wellness centre, and are very spacious. Triplex penthouse apartments. Anyway, if you need any help please contact me at boutiqueapartments@gmail.com and I will gladly help you and your family enjoy our country.

Assuming you are moving to Johannesburg, I would recommend living in any of the many 'cluster' developments....... These developments are usually well guarded and a bit more secure than living on a stand alone 'plot'. I do not know of any 'safe' places outside of Johannesburg (or even in Johannesburg). I don't think that exists in South Africa. You will learn to be extremely careful and being hyper vigilant becomes normal. We moved to Joburg with a 10 and 12 year old and had a wonderful experience.......
If you are fortunate to be moving with a corporation, please utilize all the resources that they offer. Especially a relocation person is extremely helpful.
Good luck and enjoy your stay.
