Does anyone know of a good international mover/shipper. I will be moving from Arizona, USA to Phalaborwa, South Africa. I would appreciate any recommendations for a reliable company to help me with this move.
Thanks!

Yes I do.

Stutterfords or Pickfords have international connections. hey are listed on the web. Also try funnel.co.za that is a SA search engine.

Hi Magoo

Good luck with your move. You are moving to one of the hottest parts of the country, as well as near some really beautiful spots!
In South Africa try Stuttafords to move you, unfortunately I dont know ex USA.

Thank you! I will check it out ...is one better than the other one in your opinion and do you happen to know if they have someone here in the Phoenix area with whom I can contact? I'm also wondering who to contact over there to transport it to a storage facility closer to Phalaborwa than Durban. Do you happen to know of a secure storage facility over there?

I would suggest that you 'shop' around with your local moving company. These companies are well versed with international moves and can be very helpful. We moved from Nevada to Johannesburg and our container was received by Elliot International in Joburg..... If you are moving with a company, they should also set you up with a relocation specialist.....of which I know Elliot has access. All the best with your move and enjoy South Africa!

Dear Expat4,
Thanks for the info and I know I'll enjoy S.A. I can hardly wait for it all to happen. Speaking of Elliot, were you very pleased with their moving capabilities? I will need to get my shipment moved from Durban (I assume that is the port it will go to) to someplace closer to Phalaborwa. Do you know of any reputable storage facilities for these containers?
Thanks. Magoo

Yes, yes, yes!! In fact, we just shipped a container from the US to Klerksdorp, NW Province in Sept. They are called Echo Movers and are out of NY the phone number is 877-324-6222. Our things arrived on time and in perfect condition - no complaints - would highly recommend them. Good luck.

Hi Magoo.....
Elliott's should be able to help you completely with storage and transfer. As I said, these companies are extremely well versed in moving and especially international moves. They will take care of you I'm sure. Good luck in Phalabora (sp?).....lol. We never got over to that area but ironically I have a good friend here in Oz who is from there! All the best!

Small world isn't it!!! I have another question for you. I will have to have my things in storage for some time while building. Will need to move enough clothes to 'get me through those mos. do you know which would be the best way (most economical) to send them. Airlines allow only so many bags. I'll need more than they allow. I wonder if UPS, or Fed ex, or sending the extra bags on the airlines cargo flights. Any suggestions?

Hi Magoo.....
I can only tell you that most people use what's called air freight..... You should probably phone the airline that you'll be traveling with and see if they can help you. I can't give you any idea on expense....sorry! I know when we moved to Oz I was trying to 'airfreight' a few items and it was going to be pricey so we opted to just send in baggage (fortunately just under the weight limit....). It's difficult being without all your 'stuff' for so long........but doable. Of course you will be heading into autumn/winter as well! Keep warm.

Hi Expat4!
I have another question for you if you don't mind. I am worried about my passport and what I do regarding the address that is listed on it. I am going to be selling my home here in AZ and my address eventually will be the one in S.A. How do I go about changing this in my passport and when does this have to be done. I'm not having any luck finding what I need via google. Is there a time limit to having to change this. Since I will be having a retired person temporary resident permit over there I won't have a U.S. address to list. Any thoughts on this? What did you do about all of it? Thanks. Magoo

Hi Magoo,
I am planning on moving to Jo'burg from Phoenix in mid March, with limited resources. By any chance do you think you might have room for three or four boxes in your container?
Thanks! jmorgan

Hi JMorgan..I wish I could tell you yes, but I am not sure how much room I will have or exactly when I am going to get to make the move. I am in hopes that I can leave by the middle of June, but it is still not for sure. Sorry I can't be of any help to you...but enjoy it over there when you go. What takes you there if I may ask

Magoo,
I am a mining engineer who caught the 'Africa bug' after living in the Congo for a year. I love the people, the coutryside, and the general feeling that anything is possible in Africa! I just received a scarce skills work permit for SA. I am planning on wrapping things up here over the next couple weeks, packing two suitcases of belongings, and taking off to Jo'burg after St. Patrick's Day. Thanks, and let me know if I can help you out!

Hi magoo..... sorry about the delay in response. sorry i cant help with passport details as ours was sorted by the company we relocated with. jmorgan sounds better versed than i on that aspect. have you tried usa consulate or south africa consulate? jmorgan is correct that africa certainly gets in the blood! just be aware of the power supply problems that are currently being experienced.... other than that, life is good!

Hello all -

I am currently in the process of trying to find a job in South Africa. I have been working in Information Technology for the last 10 years here in the states; I've found some decent job seeker sites, but I thought I might stop in here and see if anybody has any advice. Any recommendations for job agencies? Favorite job search sites? How did you find your job to be able to relocate? Thanks in advance for any advice!

This is good luck for me!
My husband and I are thinking of moving to phalaborwa as well. His daughter and son-in-law live there. I am a U.S. citizen and he is Danish. We want to ship a car we have from the U.S. Is this possible?
