Should stories of the crime rate deter us?

My wife and I are strongly considering relocation possibilities with our 5 year old to the Western Cape. Should we allow the issue of crime to deter us at this point or are these stories we read in the western media exaggerated. I know South Africans who have moved to Europe for these reasons. Is crime the ONLY issue that should concern?

Move to W Cape - We are in the same boat & are returning after 12 years' absence. We appreciate your concern & hopefully see it from both perspectives. Crime is DEFINITELY an issue - however same as traffic is a killer in Dubai - if one is careful & takes the necessary precautions one can minimise the risk. If you were thinking to locate there for EVER I would suggest you keep your options open to return to your home base. SA still hodls loads of promise but could go either way. In my book - the lifestyle & pleasures CT has to offer outweighs the risk factor & its worth a punt for a few years.

Crime is just a symptom of a much larger problem and that is why people are leaving South Africa

My husband and I recently moved from South Africa and I suppose we would be a bit negative in our version. But one of the reasons we left was the violent crime rate. Secondly, the economy's in a bit of tizz right now and my husband's company was starting to suffer. The cost of living was a bit much for us this year - making sure we had a really good medical insurance, car insurance fitted with anti-hijacking device, home security costs and of course, the rising fuel price. If you have kids, extra expenses will come in there as well.

Do ask other people; I know Cape Town is doing very well compared to the rest of SA. But if you do move there, do keep your options open in case things get a bit rough in SA.

If you worry abt western media hype, check out the South African websites for info.
ecr.co.za (has an excellent crimewatch section for East Coast)
iol.co.za
mg.co.za

sowetan.co.za
helenzille.co.za (the mayor of cape town; she always has interesting insight into the future of SA and what everyone can do to make it a better place)

Appreciate all the replies recieved on this so far. I'm currently living in a city (London) that has a sky-rocketing crime rate and it is difficult to know just how bad SA or any other place is in comparison. All you have are peoples testimonies and the media.

same here, im planning a move to Durban later in year , my partner is south african and im moving out to be with him. He's very open about the crime situation and hasnt done anything to paint pretty pictures of it, all i keep getting told is that vigilence is key to minimising the risk. when you read how the UK is looking to someone abroad it looks pretty grim, i guess knowledge is power so visiting gaining info and making your own decision is the best thing to do
