FROM LONDON TO J'BURG

Hi there,

I am planning on moving to J'burg in the next few months. I have recently received a job offer so I'm very excited. Is a monthly salary of R30,000 (pre tax) enough to live off?

I visited in August and absolutely fell in love with the place.

The next step is for my new employers to apply for my work permit. Will this be difficult to obtain? Also is it common for companies to help with relocation expenses?

I know the crime rate is a big concern. Does anyone have any survival tips?

I won't be shipping any furniture, just a few boxes and clothes. Does anyone know of any companies in the uk that deal with small moves to SA?

You must be very naive, brave or foolish to go and work in Joburg.
From my personal work experience in SA I would strongly advise you to think very carefully before taking that Bold and Brave decision. Joburg is a S*** HOLE and a nightmare to work. Nobody's safety is guranteed at all. You are very likely to get mugged or shot in the City and the surounding area. I had fair share of my scares. The salary you are being offered is in line with local labour rates and not the standard that you are getting from UK. Living accommodation is very expensive. The only good thing I found about SA is the weather and Wild Animal reserves.
Good Luck
(u gona need it)

Hi, I moved to SA in 2005, I was originally from the UK(London) please do not be put off by the saddo in the previous post.
SA is a magical place and the job offer you have sounds fab, go for it. What country in this world dosent have crime? if your new employer is getting you a work permit, then the process is very easy. The only survival tips you need are, 'common sense' as required in any big city in the world. I used 'Anglo Pacific' (www.anglopacific.co.uk) I only had a few bits, they were great and fairly cheap.
Good luck, and enjoy your new life.

Hi,

Thanks for your advice. It's very much appreciated. I absolutely loved it when I was there, didn't want to come back to London. My partner lives there so I won't be totally alone. I find the people to be very friendly. I will definitely look up that removal company. Thanks for the advice :*)

I am also maybe planning a move to Jo-burg. I just got hired by an international school... I job i wanted was in London, but I didn't get it. I am having trouble getting the real idea about living and working in Jo-burg... I hear how amazing it is and then read that you can't walk around... I am single and worried about meeting people/dating...

I visited SA; Pretoria and Capetown on a relocation trip.

There are security issues that you must consider. The issues are manageable, but they will effect your life style. Capetown was very nice, similar in culture to San Diego. But the security issues are there also.

You need to visit the areas you are thinking about living in and make your own decisions.

I enjoyed my trip, met a lot of very nice people. It is a beautiful country.
Take the security issues seriously they are real, but managiable.

Good luck!

I have decided to base out of Nairobi.

The main factors in my decision were proximity to the projects I am working on.

I did visit both Pretoria and Capetown.

Both cities are very nice and I could live easily in either one.

The security issues are real you need to take them seriously, but they are manageable.

I met many people in both cities. Everyone I met was very nice and very helpful.

If it were a little closer to my work, I would probably move to Pretoria.

Hope this information is helpful.

Good luck with your travels.
