Moving to SA (Cape town) with kids

Hello
I am moving to SA with my partner who holds a SA passport.
We are not married and I have a son from a previous relationship.

I am wondering if I can register my son in school if we are entering the country on a tourist visa as we only plan to get married early next year.

Do you have any advice for people moving over with children?

When do I need to start looking at schools? What should I look for?

Is there a way for us to meet other parents and children in the area outside of formal school activities?

Hope to get some advice as this is quite daunting on me.

Hi

Do you have sole custody of your son? If so, then he will need a study permit that will allow him to attend school here.

At the moment it is still possibel to submit an application while on a tourist visa in South Africa. This will, however, change once the new legislation comes into effect.

After this, you can still enter SA and will receive a tourist visa, however, when applying for a residency permit, the application will need to be submitted at the SA embassy in your home country.

In terms of your situation, you do not need to be married. As your partner is South African, you can apply for a Life Partner Permit.

If you have a job offer, one can add a work endorsement onto that permit. Alternatively, one can add a business endorsement onto the permit, which would allow you to run your own business.

In terms of movign to SA, I would suggest that you (and your partner) come over and have a look for yourself. There is a lot of info on the Internet, but nothing is better than having a look in person.

This will allow you to look at places to live, send your son to attend school, and create a healthy social life.

In terms of schools, the sooner you approach schools, the better. Especially private schools may have waiting lists, so I would suggest obtaining as much info as possible before you make the move.

Hope this helps.

But do let us know if there is anything else.

Regards,

Joachim Schuckmann

Hi, any relocation to a new country is daunting! With regards to moving to South Africa, it is very important to investigate school placement ASAP-especially if you wish to enrol your children in private (often referred to as "independent"schools in SA) schools. I would suggest the following websites: www.saschools.co.za, www.isasa.org,www.independentschools.com, www.saprivateschools.co.za, www.schoolguide.co.za. Once you have placed your kids in school then you can begin your home search. If you use a relocation company, they can manage the entire process for you. Happy moving!
