my huspand to be is set on moving to south africa next year some time. I have read some of the forums about the crime rate in jhb and its where he wants to live. We are going to be starting a family soon and I am really put off because of the crime rate. Also he has a job set up with his cousins huspand so that works out for him but we are both white is it really going to be that difficult for me to get a job? Any adivice on where to move and what to do once we get there i would apprciate it

You right to be concerned about crime, but remember that there are over 4 million people living in Joburg - most of them out of choice. Staying safe is really a matter of taking common sense precautions and living in safer areas and not doing deliberately unsafe things. As for finding employment your race can be a disadvantage when it comes to getting jobs in large corporations or Government, but in the ordinary course of events it isn't a drawback. There are nearly a million "Whiteys" living here so they can't all be wrong. The good things are: best climate in the world, very friendly and easy city to live in, very safe - no earthquakes, hurricanes, volcanoes, terrorists, tsunamis. The biggest risk are the crazy minibus taxi drivers - in fact bad drivers in general. The best advice I can give you is DRIVE CAREFULLY!

You will enjoy South Africa and be pleasantly surprised. In Johannesburg the most popular areas are the northern suburbs, and many families opt to live in a secure estate, there are some excellent lifestyle estates with 24 hour security which offer great quality of life. I have many friends and some family who live in Johannesburg (by choice) and are very happy there. Sure, people take precautions against crime for example avoiding certain areas, especially after dark, and installing decent security around their homes, but don't be put off. Johannesburg is a modern, vibrant and friendly city within easy reach of many fantastic holiday and weekend destinations in South Africa. If you are competent and qualified, you should have no problem finding work as well. Skin colour does not matter.
