Cost of living in South Africa is a little higher than UK, especially when it comes to consumer durables, cars etc.
The only schools that offer A-levels are private schools. You can expect to pay around ZAR 50,000 per year, for excellent British public school standard establishments (Johannesburg - St. Johns, St Stithians, Roedean, St Andrews). There is also a British International College which I wouldn't recommend.

Thanks for the reply - I'll look into the other schools.
Can you eloborate on why you wouldn't recommend British international college. Thats the only one that we found.

Also we were looking at Bryanston, Is that a safe area? Are there any safe areas?

As far as living there, is there an prefered annual income to make living there easier.? Is there broadband internet readily available?

Thanks again.

Bryanston is a large upmarket suburb to the north of Sandton, and is as safe as any. One just has to observe the usual common sense precautions, which you will get used to.

We don't recommend the British International School as it really is not a proper school - more of a sort of college or crammer - poor discipline, no uniforms, poor facilities. The proper private schools are infinitely superior, especially if coming from UK.

Are you coming on a corporate employment transfer? If so you should insist on receiving professional relocation assistance when you move to Johannesburg

Cost of living in SA is very reasonable, if you convert to other currencies. I moved from the UK to SA and found SA to be cheaper. If you are going to earn South African Rand, live in Bryanston and want to send the kids to a good private school, I would say you need to earn at least R25,000 a month to live comfortably, depending on what benefits you get. If you will be responsible for your own medical insurance, own vehicle and petrol (no company car), own mobile phone contract (not a work phone) etc you will want to earn a bit more, say above R35,000 a month to enjoy a good standard of living. Many families of 4 survive on less than R20,000 a month combined income, but then your monthly budget will be rather tight, you will be limited regarding rent you can afford, and may not be able to afford private schooling. Top professionals and executives earn well above R40,000 a month, typically.
