I'm looking into moving to SA in the near future. I'm planning to travel there in Feb of 2012 and would like to find someone to show me the ropes and help me out in this venture. Please respond to this post with any questions or comments you have and I will try and get back to you promptly. THANKS in advance.

I am thinking about moving to SA (Cape Town) Can anyone inform me of the cost of living/ house prices, rent and best place to live. I was told that JH has more work the CP but Cape Town is a safer place to live.
I also want to know about employment in the building construction industry as am a builder in Perth. Do my qualification meet SA standards?
Thanks for your help

My process is done, I'm flying in finally Friday! To all I just want to let you know South Africa got very high standars as in qualifications to obtain the rights to work for expats, I highly recommend reading all SAQA and ECSA requirements, I am not sure if because I am a Colombian engineer, but my advice...make sure to have all your original documents in hand, if not in English translated by an official translator, if possible talk to local immigration agents and they will provide with all you need.
It took me mo than 2 months, the time difference, distance, didn't help much. Always use certified courier services when sending your documents.
I could gladly say I am on my way to South Africa in less than 100 hours!! Can't wait...good luck to all, i could provide with more information if require about my process.

Let me know!

I live in Australia
Visit Cape Town and PE early in the year.
Cost of living is lower hen Australia and love Cape Town.
Some I talked to do work in JH and travel (fly) in and out each week while their families live in very attractive coastal towns.

Cape Town it self seems to have lower wages but better living and life style then PE.
Exchange rate makes is excellent .
I am looking at moving early 2012.
From what I have looked up employment is possible in higher up states/areas near JH and fly in and out.
I myself am looking to work around Cape Town.
Hoe this helps

My view is that the Cape provinces (Western cape, northern cape and eastern cape) offer the best quality of life, lowest crime and lower cost of living. In particular the Garden Route area, very beautiful and safe but jobs are scarce. Yes Johannesburg has more jobs and higher salaries than Cape Town but Cape Town is safer and has better quality of life, in my opinion. The most scenic provinces with the warmest weather are Mpumalanga (main city is Nelspruit) and Kwazulu-natal (main city is Durban).
Overall SA is a great country to live in, very affordable especially with the exchange rate as it is now. If you are going to earn local currency, a decent salary is R20,000 a month, and an excellent salary is R40,000 a month. Most middle class people earn between R15,000 and R30,000 a month.
A 2 bedroom flat or townhouse costs around R550,000 and a small 3 bedroom house with single garage in a reasonable suburb will cost R750,000. A nice 4 bedroom house with two garages in a good area will cost over a million. Vacant plots in a suburb costs about R500 per square metre and building costs are around R5000 per sqm (or less if you build yourself).
I find the biggest misconceptions is about crime and infrastructure - it is a lot safer to live here than most people abroad realise, and the country is a lot more first world than you might think (far ahead of other African countries).
Hope this helps and good luck with the move!
