Moving to Cape Town: Share our container

Post New Topic

we are planning to ship our household goods to Cape Town towards the end of April 2012. I have a good price on a 20' container through my employer. We most likely want to use half of the container and get someone else to share the cost for the rest. Please contact me on 07725995598

Hi, thank you for your offer, unfortunately April is a bit to soon for us, we are planning to move towards December/January. But I would really appreciate it if you could give me more or less an idea of how much your relocation is costing you and through which company your employer got the container.

Thanks again and good luck with the move!

Would love to hear from you whether there were any issues on arriving in Cape Town that you could pre-warn us about? I've heard horror stories about Custom delays and storage costs.
We're hoping to move back the end of 2012 and wondered whether worthwhile to take my bike & car ...?

Hi everyone

We are now back in Cape Town, very good feeling indeed.

To answer your questions:

1) Yes I did bring my car back. There are a number of hurdles to jump through but if you prepared to do the dog work then it's worth it.

If you are a returning citizen you may bring one vehicle back VAT and Duty free as long as you can prove that you originally emigrated, and and now coming back permanently. There are a whole lot of way and things to do but best advice is to check the SARS website and get as much advice from car shipping people as possib;le.

Our car arrived in PE and SARS didnt want to authorise it but eventually after a few tries and my clearing agent calling the branch manager it was signed off. NOTE: Affirdavits will be required for any missing info they rerquire.

Try to get onto any paperwork as soon as possible, dont leave it last minute.

You need to apply for an import permit and LOA from South Africa. The permit is free, the LOA is about R1800.

For shippping the car, I used RORO (Roll on Roll Off) from Southampton port. www.autoshippers.co.uk
But if I had known might have approached the ship company direct: http://www.hoeghautoliners.com

I paid about £1300 for shipping and about £200 for insurance.

To clear the car in PE I used Lochhead White & Womersley (PTY) LTD, a guy named Frans Joubert helped me. He was great. The cost to clear the car was about R5000 which was about R3000 cheaper than most others.

I am glad to be driving my old 03 plate BMW around cape town, the best part is that it's paid for, a real bonus not having to buy a car without even getting a job yet.

2) for our household goods, we used DHL. I landed up flling a 20' container. Cost me about £1500 to ship and another R9000 in Cape Town to Clear and deliver to Somerset West. I used KENCO Clearing, based in Montague Gardens. I had no issues, Customs didnt even inspect the container. This was the easy part of the process. The car is much harder work.

I hope that answers your questions and can at least point you in the right direction. I am happy to answer any others you may have.

Paul
