I am considering giving my family of 7 a new start in a new country. What is family life like for Americans in SA? I am attracted to the land and climate. But what is it like to really live there with american children? What about multiracial children?

My wife and I left Iowa after 24 years and retired to a Cape Town suburb in 2004. We have no children but have had very positive experiences in the community. If some of you plan to work here, you will need to explore the visa situation. If you have an interest in starting a business it probably would be easier. - Dave

Dear leigolic
I might be able to help you with you questions as my kids have moved to SA from NY about 2 years ago. I am South African but lived in the US for 15 years. My kids are American and multiracial. Please mail me at sharleen@mobiliti.mu so I can answer your questions more specifically.

Hi Dave,
its so nice to hear positive about CT as when i tell people were are going to back there (hubby is from there) with our son people think we are mad. Well except our friends there. Going on forums can difficult as all so negative. I have lived there for 1 year and going back to the southern suburbs for a more relaxed paced life. F

Hi, F -
We're trying to spread a positive message about this place. (Unfortunately, the politicians are not helping.) We live in Somerset West and love the nature reserve & the mountains out here. We're both very active in the community and know a lot of very wonderful people.
Dave

As a European, I've lived in Cape Town and the Garden Route and enjoyed both. If you earn well in SA, so you can live in a nice suburb and your kids can go to good schools, the quality of life and low cost of living (compared to Europe) is fantastic, especially in Cape Town. As you said, the climate is great, and the scenery and people also. Cape Townians are very culturally and racially tolerant in my experience. You and your children would be welcomed and easily make new friends. If you slot in by joining a local church, sport or leisure clubs you will fit in very quickly and make fantastic friends. Most South Africans are very friendly and hospitable. Richard
