Moving to Johannesburg is it safe?

Hi,

I am an IT Professional from India and have been offered a job in Johannesburg Sandton area could you please let me know will it be safe to move over to Johannesburg? Also I would be earning around 24000 Rand per month can one survive in this salary? I would like to stay in Sandton area itself so that I will be near to my office could anyone advise what approx is the rent in this area? Also I will be moving with my wife and daughter aged 2 years will it be safe for them to stay at home alone while I am at work?

Well I've been to Chennai and it's about as safe as there however Sandton is the best and safest area of Jo'burg BUT is very expensive and R24000.00 a month will not be enough for a family to live comfortably. You would have to look at Midrand which is also a safe area and about 20km away. You need a minimum of R32000.00 a month unless your Company is providing you with a car, medical aid and housing allowance.

Well I wouldn't move for that salary! Expect to pay R14000.00pm for a good place to stay. R3500.00pm for groceries. R3000.00 for medical insurance then you need a car plus insurance plus R700pm for Satellite TV. Not worth it.
