" My husband and I are looking for fellow Americans who have chosen to live on the Costa Blanca - specifically, the Calpe/Altea/Benidorm/Benissa area of Spain - to get together for cafe con leche and/or vino. Anyone? Thanks. E-mail is okay. Cheryl "

" Cheryl, Hello I am a college senior doing research about Americans that have decided to live abroad in Spain. I am interested in what types of occupations found and geographic location. Also, information about why you and your husband originally left America would be helpful. I would greatly appreciate any information you can give me. Thanks a lot and good luck with finding other Americans. Jake Reid "

" Hi, Jake. Sounds like an interesting project. Good Luck. Let''s see. My husband and I have been visiting Spain every year for the past ten years and really just fell in love with the sea, sun, food, history, people, culture, lifestyle and everything else that exists in Spain. Mostly, I guess I could say that we fell in love with the lifestye. There''s an old saying ""If a person doesn''t love spain, they''re either dead or have no romance in their soul."" While we are Americans, and proud to be Americans, our country is on the fast track to decline and we''re tired of the fast track. We want someplace where we can sit back and relax and really enjoy life. We want someplace where we have some privacy and a sense of being in control. We want to wake up every morning and know the sun is going to shine. We want to meet (and become friends) with people from other countries. We want to learn a new language. We want to get away from the fast-food and fast-eat restaurants and be able to have a meal that lasts 3 hours. We want to be able to go to a market every day and buy food that is ""fresh."" We want to be able to travel the world without spending 6 hours just reaching the east or west coast borders of America. We want to live around history - and in this country, we tear down our history to build new. We want wine that is made without sulfites and cigarettes with additives. We want to get away from being politically correct and simply accept people and their ideas at face value. The key is not to run away from something - but run TO something better. Is it going to be better? We don''t know, but we have to give it a try. And if we don''t do it now, we probably never will. Picture this: Sitting on a white stone patio overlooking the sea with the sun sparkling off the water. The sailboats are out, the sea gulls are swooping, the parasailers are flying. The wine is perfect, the bread incredible, the olives delicious, the jamon awesome. Doesn''t get much better than that! Sorry, I tend to get carried away. Fortunately, I write customized books for a very specific niche so I can work anywhere in the world. My husband took early retirement so that is not a problem. Without that flexibility, I doubt if we could make this work. I know finding jobs are extremely difficult - even if you know the language. Hope this helps. Any other questions, just let me know. E-mail is okay. Out of curiousity - why did you pick spain? Have you ever been there? "

" Hope you received my previous message - seems as if I''m having computer glitches this morning. Opps, I forgot. We live on the Mediterrean Sea about 4 1/2 hours south of Barcelona on the Costa Blanca. If you''re familiar with Spain we''re actually between Valencia and Alicante. It''s a part of Spain where we have the sea in front of us and the mountains behind us - and 350 days of sun a year. The average temp. is about 75. It''s an area where a lot of Brits (as well as Germans) live. Not too many Americans. Let me know if you have other questions. Hope this helps. "

" Cheryl, Well firstly thank you for the feedback. It is very helpful when I receive so much info in a response. To answer your question of why spain, I spend 9 months living and studying in Bilbao and I too fell in love with the culture and lifestyle. I understand every word you wrote to me because I too have those same feelings. With your response I will be able to make a strong point that Americans are starting to get tired of American culture. Since my return form Spain I have been studying spanish politics and this report is about spanish immigration and I chose to study American Emigration to Spain. Your situation sounds very unique, being that you have the ability to work in spain very independantly. Do you know any Americans working and living more conventionally in Spain? I would greatly appreciate if you could pass on my questions to them. Ok well I have to get back to work. If you need to get in touch with me feel free to email me at jreid31@yahoo.com. Thanks again. Jake Reid "

" Contact Scott and Raquel at SRAQUEL134@aol.com. Scott is an American who is married to a Spaniard. He has worked in Spain previously and they plan on permanently moving back to Spain within the next 2 years for the same reasons we talked about. Raquel''s parents make jewelry for all of Spain and Portugal and they (Scott and Raquel) may be able to provide more info. Just tell them that I told you to contact them. Good Luck. If you need more info, let me know. Cheryl "

" We live in Tomelloso which is near Albacete. If only we were a little closer. There are no americans around us either, but of course we are basically in the middle of no where. My husband grew up here and we only live here in the summer(we live in Italy the rest of the year). Wouldn´t it be great to have a little group going for dinners and get togthers? We have that where we live in Italy and it makes it so much more bearable. I have definately had my best year in Europe because they are here. I live for Sundays(our restaurant day!). By the way, how old are you all? I´m 26 and my husband Emi is 25. We have 2 girls(5 and 20 months). If you ever get the urge to come to Castilla-La Mancha-look me up. "

" Wow! You two live a great life! Congratulations. We really would love to find some Americans so we can get together occasionally in Spain just to visit. I don''t think we''re too far from you - I know we''ve driven through your area more than once. Guess you know from the assorted emails that we''re on the coast between Calpe and Altea. I just put my husband on the plane for Spain this afternoon - I follow on Friday for a month. Back in June for my mother-in-laws 90th birthday and then back to Spain in July. We''re actually older than you (50ish) but really young in lifestyle. For example, I drive one of the fastest cars on the highway and love every minute of it! I dare any 20 year old to beat me in a race! Anyway, we''d love to get together sometime. If you want to e-mail me your phone # in Spain, I''ll give you a call sometime before we head back to America the first part of June - perhaps we could meet somewhere for cafe con leche. I''d love to hear how you got so lucky to spend half the year in Italy and half the year in Spain. I am so envious! Cheryl And David Axon "
