Hi. We are moving to Barcelona in October and we're trying to decide on an English speaking school for our boys (nearly 12 and nearly 15). Because of where I'll be working (20km north of the city) we probably want a school in the city not in an outsie suburb. The ones on the net we have found are: Benjamin Franklin, Oak House, St Pauls, St Peters and Kensington. Does anyone know anything about any of these schools and their reputations? Also do you know about any other schools in/near Barcelona that are really good and we should consider. We did briefly think about Spanish schools but people have said that kids lose a year of schooling while they leanr to understand Spanish (we know none so far). Thanks for any help!

Hi there. I am from San Diego and will moving in August to teach at the American School of Barcelona. It is an english speaking school although students receive additional instuction to learn Spanish. Obviously, I can't give you too much of a testimonial about the school since I haven't started yet but you can check out the website at A-S-B.com. I have been really impressed by the elementary principal, the school director, and the administrative staff. I have been in contact with some of the teachers working there already and they love it! I think it is going to be wonderful and they use California teaching standards which I have considered very rigorous and effective. I hope this helps! Good luck! Oh, and I know a family who moved to Barcelona with their two children (elementary) and they were not impressed with the Benjamin Franklin school. The mother is a teacher as well.

Hi. Thanks for that reply. It was very helpful. We got very close to going with the Benjamin Franklin School, but in the end we found out about the Kensington School, which offers Japanese, which my older son is already studying. We did consider ASB but it is further out of town and I have to travel to Cabrils every day by train- we decided it would make the travel too long for everyone. However we will get them to go for one year there and can always change next year. It is really hard to decide from the other side of the world. Good luck with your teaching there- maybe we'll pop out and see you. Jill

Hi, Kiwifamily! How about the Kensington in Barcelona? We are thinking of changing our children to that school, but I can't find any information. Are you children happy there? Would you recommend it? Thank you!

We have a 12 year old and are planning to live on a sail boat in Barcelona. Am interested in English speaking school not to pay 9000 Euros/year or $1300 monthly! Less expensive school than American school and closer to the waterfront port? Does anyone know of such a good school in Barcelona?

There are 2 port areas, Port Vell and Port Olimpic. The former is closer to the city centre and the latter closer to an area known as Vila Olimpica. They have a state school in Vila Olimpica that teaches some courses (i.e. history etc) in English. As with all state schools here it depends exactly on where you live as to whether you have a chance of getting a place. There is a drive to teach more English in public schools as of next year. If you are looking for an English Speaking school per se then the private option is the only solution. Most private English language schools are uptown or just out of town and cost around 600-700 euros monthly. Please also check out http://www.kidsinbarcelona.com for other information on living in the city with children.

Hi Sorry I didn't reply earlier- I haven't checked the forum for a while. Yes ours boys have been going to Kensington School for over 3 years now. We are happy with it but of course its expensive now over 10K euro a year. They have both been sitting UK exams. The classes are small so they get plenty of help from the teachers. The teachers work them quite hard to keep the standard up. Not alot of subject choice or extra curricular activities. Ask any other questions you like.

Hi, No we left Barcelona 18 months ago. Our kids went to Kensington School for 4 years. We were very happy with it. Very good academically. They do some sport at school but for team sports the kids have to join local clubs, which is quite challenging. Its in Pedralbes, which has good access by local busses and not too far from the Metro. Families live all around. We lived near the centre of Barcelona and the boys went by bus to school. Let me know if you have more questions.

Hi Kiwifamily, my children (6, 7)go to Kensington school. Being small it is very friendly with over 20 nationalities. My children are half Japanese and there are currently 6 Japanese families at the school. I understand that the only other school with a Japanese connection is the full Japanese school in Sant Cugat. We chose Kensington initially because unlike EVERY other school including American, German and French, it is not subsidised in some way by the Catalan goverment and so does not teach in Catalan unlike ALL the other schools which can have a high Catalan content, to the detriment we feel of the national language and Spanish. The school GCSE and exam results are good at the top of the school. The school caters largely for families from embassies and executives of big foreign companies who are posted to Barcelona and so the average stay is 3-4 years and is designed for children to be able to slip in and out of an English type education.

hi, I know it is years after you posted your message, but I am looking into moving to BCN and was wondering if you ever found a job as a counselor, or know anything about the possibility of setting up on your own. I am a Mental Health Counselor, in my own business in NYC and would be interested to know the ins and outs of having my own office in BCN. I would also be interested in a position with an established clinic, if there is a place to find one. Can you help?
