For many newcomers and those considering living in Spain, access to quality medical care is a top priority. Please help those moving to your area by posting your experiences with the local health care system. Also, include any information about health insurance in Spain. Be sure to post the name of your city, region or town.

I'm lucky that I have a work permit and have the right to health care even if I am North American and not a member of the EC. Many Spaniards complain about their system and I set them right - they are SPOILED rotten and have no idea how fortunate they really are in comparison to Americans. I have been on BOTH ends of the spectrum - I've been a Spanish business owner (paying payroll taxes) and a regular employee having part of my paycheck deducted for health care. I have lived in a small town as well as a big city and I couldn't be more THRILLED with the system. My GP's have been fantastic and in one case that I didn't like her I was allowed to change. I always get an appointment and never have to wait more that 2 or 3 days. The price of medication is a LAUGHABLE it's so cheap! I've had my regular paps and my mamograms with hardly more than 3 weeks to a months wait... I've had minor surgeries performed - amazing quality. I've been admitted to the ER and held overnight for tests - my care was excellent! In fact, the times I've had a private paid system I ended up never using it because when I did the waiting list and care in a private clinic was virtually the same. If you can qualify for it - don't doubt a second, got for it!

Apocalisanow, my wife and I live in France under a health care provision for legal expats called CMU Couverteur Medical Universelle. For this we pay 8% of our income above the poverty level which I think is about 12,000 euros per year income. Does Spain have any provision like this for legal expats or do we just get private insurance? Muchissima gracias. James "Jaime" Kearney
