Recently we have been reading articles regarding the issuance of a green card by the Spanish government if a home is purchased in Spain. Does anyone have any information on whether the Spanish government has agreed to move forward on this proposal? My wife and I are both U. S. citizens and very near retiring and moving to Valencia and this has more than piqued our interest. Thank you!

Yes, it's the law but they raised the value of the property to 500,000 euros. http://www.worldpropertyjournal.com/featured-columnists/spanish-property-insight/spain-visa-law-approved-spanish-residency-schengen-area-spanish-parliament-residency-permits-real-estate-investments-eu-nationals-7413.php

We are also looking to move in the Valencia area about 3 or so years from now. 500K euros might work, but are the other permanent residency alternatives? Do (can) people retain US Citizenship or obtain dual citizenship?

Typically, accepting the citizenship of one country requires the renunciation of the previous country. In other words, if you become a Spanish citizen, you will no longer be an American citizen. Check out this for a related discussion (http://www.expatriatecafe.com/forums/index.php?topic=3126.0)
The real question is related to why you want to change your citizenship. What benefits do you see as part of being a Spanish citizen? Trust me, as an expat here in Valencia, I have not experienced any real challenges because I am a US citizen.
Good luck! -christopher (http://www.ValenciaAtLast.com)

Many of us have both citizenship but it may be an american requirement. I know many american living in Spain and they kept theirs. There are some formalities to live here, but it seems easy to get a resident visa. Apart from embassy inquiry, if you visit Spain, bank manager can provide more detail on financial/documentation issues too.

I/we certainly do not want to give up our US citizenship...was just wondering about the requirements for permanent residency for a non Spanish citizen. Sounds like we can get permanent residency without messing with our citizenship. Thanks for the replies.
