NIE Help (Modelo 790)

I really hoping that someone on here can help... Right here goes:

My husband and I have recently moved to Spain; I have been offered a job here and we have started the process of obtaining an NIE/ green card as we plan to be here for over 3 months. After completing the EX-18 form and complying the relevant documents we arranged an appointment at the local police station. The police officer was happy with everything that we provided and gave us a Modelo 790 form which he advised we would have to complete and take to any local bank to pay the application fee before we could be issued our NIE/ green card...

This is where the problem starts; I have taken the form to two different banks and they have both said that I need an NIE number in order for them to process the payment. I have explained on both occasions that the payment is to apply for an NIE (ticking the appropriate box on the Modelo 790) however, they have said I need an NIE in order to proceed. I've been back to the police station and been told they will not issue the NIE until I have paid SO.... I'm at a stand still with my application.

Does anyone on here have any advise or information on this process? I'm really keen to get this sorted so that I can start my new job (I cant start until I have an NIE and social security number - which I cant get until I have an NIE).

Thanks for any help you can offer!!!

First, which country are you from - EU or non-EU? We are from the US and three different things were done (1) obtain residency visa, (2) apply locally for national police registration and pay at local bank, and (3) pick up residency"green" card. A tourist visa is not enough but the clock is ticking once you arrive (3 months). The NIE (number) is assigned when residency visas are issued which has to be completed first. You have started the local process without finishing the visa process. It is more difficult to do this after you arrive. Generally your new employer will help with this. We used a local facilitator to get our residency cards, all done after FIRST getting our residency visas before arriving in Spain. Try NIEBarcelona.com for more information.

Thank you for our reply, I really appreciate it! We are from the UK. We had already made the appointment at the Local Police station, it was the police officer that gave us the Modelo 790 form to pay for the NIE. After my first 2 failed attempts I decided to go into town and go to every bank until I was able to pay... On my third attempt of the day I was able to pay at the 'Bankinter' bank chain. Thanks again!

Most things that deal with Spanish businesses and bureaucracy take three (or more) trips to get resolved, with inconsistent info being given by the officials involved. :)
