Retire in Spain, how much per month?

I'll be retiring in a couple of years from the military and I'm hoping that my retirement check will be more than enough to live on. $3,500.00 per month.

I'm not exactly sure where I read that the amount you must show in your bank account but I thing it's about 1,000 euros a month times 12 which makes it 12,000 a year. Someone will probably correct me.

If you are a US citizen, it depends upon which embassy or consult you are using. It also depends on whether you are single or applying as a couple. Fortunately it is not that much more for a couple. We started with the embassy in DC as we were living in Alexandria at the time. We had to provide proof of at least $90,000/yr. We had to move to Texas before we could complete our application and the Houston consulate only required about $35000 for the both of us. Never found out why there is a difference. I had read that the consulate in San Francisco is higher that the one in Houston.

Why guess? They have the specific amount posted on the Spanish government's visa requirements.

According to the Spanish gov. website it is 25,560 euros plus 6390 euros for each accompanying family member so 35,000 usd seems about right.Depending on your savings you might want to consider an Investors Visa.Just a thought,Portugal offers very good conditions on retiree and investment visas and once you have a Schengen visa you are free to circulate in the Schengen Zone. You will need to arrange private health care for the visa. You can live very well on 3,500 usd per month as long as you are not in Madrid or Barcelona and frequenting expensive venues.Good Luck.

With that income, you can live anywhere in Spain. Barcelona and Madrid are not that expensive either. If you are not buying at this time and you want to live in Madrid, there is plenty of new property available to rent.

I am just starting my visa application process through the consulate in Miami, Florida. I spoke with someone from the consulate last week who told me 1000 euros/month would be OK. I've seen a range of income requirements - they seem to vary by consulate! Anyone worked through Miami? Opinions on the 1000 euros?

Thank you.

Dhw, it is possible. Many not include travel expenses and few other items.
