I would like to relocate to Spain I lost my husband this past year and we had hoped to go to Spain. Now I would like to try to live there but I do have a small 30lb dog and it seems overwhelming to try to bring him with me. Is there an easy way? what do I do when I arrive at the airport with the dog in a crate, he is not friendly with strangers> what happens at airport? and what about getting to my rental? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Connie

Hi Connie,
I was sad to read of your loss but have every admiration for your determination to carry on your dream to move to Spain!
Where are you planning to rent? I live in the Almeria Province and we successfully brought over our Shiba Inu with a local dog rescue team who have a wealth of experience with nervous animals! Perhaps this might be an option rather than the stress of a plane? The dog rescue people take dogs over to the UK on a regular basis where they have been adopted and then come back fairly empty so for a fee could be prepared to bring your dog back with them. There are also a large number of companies that provide this service and it would be an idea to go on a local forum asking about animal carriers that provide the best service. It does take a little longer but they are walked, fed and watered throughout. It gives you time then to arrive and prepare for their arrival causing less stress to you!

We brought our dog but we came via Geneva, Switzerland. It was pretty easy except for some arduous paperwork. We had to get a certified vet to sign off on our dogs health and get Dept of Agriculture paperwork also but it was all pretty easy. After that we crated her (she is 20 lbs) and had all the paperwork attached to the crate + copies with us. She was checked and registered at Kennedy in New York but, honestly, she wasn't even looked at when we arrived in Geneva and just walked straight through customs with her. My son, who also lives in europe, had the exact same experience.
Let me know if you need more information.

We brought our cat with us to Madrid in Sept. The paperwork in the States was like the previous post. However, getting her out of the Madrid Airport was complicated--had to go to cargo carrier company pay a tax then go to another Gov't office to have a vet sign off on the paperwork (not the cat, interestingly) then back to the shipper to pick her up--all in all about three hours of going from place to place and paying fees/taxes.

My wife and I brought two cats into Spain two years ago and had no trouble at all. We paid no extra fees or taxes when we got to Madrid. There were a lot of paper work and hoops to jump through in the US before we arrived in Spain.
