Hello: My wife and I have recently moved to Madrid from the US. We are looking to replace our expensive global hospitalization plan with something local that covers diagnostic, dental as well as catastrophic. I am looking at the following companies: Adeslas, Asisa, ASSSA, Bupa and Sanitas. Has anyone hd experience with any of these companies? Who have you used and why? Thanks

Hi, there, and congrats on heading toward a new adventure in your lives! I recently lived in Valencia for two years, and originally had the only viable insurance that was offered internationally, which was Cigna, and it was for catastrophic insurance only.

I was able to get Sanitas insurance, total coverage, including dental and vision, and it cost me about $100/month. Their service was great, and doctor visits were covered at 100%. Every person is different, so this may be a different price for you, but I was very pleased with the experience.

I also investigated Adeslas, which is owned by the bank La Caixa. I was not pleased with their offerings and price, and only used their dental insurance for about three months before switching to Sanitas.

Good luck with your research, and let me know if you have questions!

Best,
Christopher

Me too but after a move to Sevilla in February 2017. In the meantime, what companies are YS expats using to meet the visa requirement for proof of a no co-pay policy?

We used Azimuth Beacon, a reasonably priced international travel health plan and paid the zero deductible premium. The consulate in Houston accepted it for our visa application.

We did Sanitas through BBVA (the bank) for three adults. We previously had Swiss Life which was very expensive (in France) but it worked very well. We don't have any experience with Sanitas yet but everyone we know tells us it works just fine. The three of us (age 64, 67 and 35) are paying under 300 euro per month

Thanks very much for the feedback. I am leaning in the Sanitas direction as well.

I would recommend Sanitas too. I have a policy that l like , not too expensive and it includes dentistry.

Can Sanistas be purchased from the US? Anyone have a toll free number?

I'm not sure if this is going to help, but they can hopefully point you in the right direction:

Also, the website for the Sanitas insurance company in Spain is http://www.sanitas.es/. Not sure if they will have someone who can speak English, but it is worth a shot.

Can someone tell me whether a US citizen can buy into the public healhcare system in Spain. From everything I read, the answer is no. But I have a friend who tells me otherwise. He is from the UK, but says he has American friends who do so for about 100 Euros a month.

I don't think you can - but there are loads of private ones (Sanitas, Adeslas, etc.) that are very reasonably priced. The public system is based on working in a Spanish company and paying related taxes to accommodate your healthcare. The UK folks have different rules that allow them to use the public healthcare system, which is something one of my friends from the UK told me.

Thanks. I just learned elsewhere that you actually can (something called "convenio especial") but only after you are a resident for a year. I have looked into private insurance, but we have a few pre-existing conditions so that may be difficult. (I know very few people of my age that do not, so I am not sure how they swing it.) Thanks again for the reply.

Not true. Your friend is UK we are Americans. We can not get the national plan unless we pay into it by working. and to work you need a permit and right now, with 22% unemployment in Spain, the chances that you get hired are nill to zero.

Yes, my friend is from the UK, but as I said, he has American friends who have bought into it.
