It's been a while since you posted this, so I don't know if you're already in Sri Lanka, but my advice would be to check with The British Council. They have a good library and what seems like a great opportunity to live in wonderful places around the world. I've met many lovely expats thanks to the British Council!

hope that you would have received many info by now. It is a wonderful coutnry to visit or to spend part of your life here. Being a Canadian, wonder whether you would find a job which would fulfill your financial needs with a local job unless you join an foreign company in sri lanka or work for a ngo.
you can have a tourist visa on arrival for 30 days. if you are planning to work here, then you will have to prove your employment or your specific business plan and apply for a visa through sri lankan high commission in canada.
