Cost of living in Colombo

Dear All,

I am new to EE and would greatly appreaciate some guidance. I have been offered a very exciting opportunity to work in Sri Lanka for 6 months and I am desperate to say 'yes!' but need to work out if I can afford the cost of living. I have been offered Rs60,000/month towards expenses but am struggling to work out how far this goes.

I will be working in Ragama, but would ideally like to live in Colombo. I would need to be able to afford somewhere comfortable to live (either a 1 bed appartment or a room in a shared place) in a safe part of town, and also travel too and from work each day. I would like to be able to eat out once or twice a week, travel to the beaches at the weekends etc.

Could anybody help me work out roughly how much I would need to supplement my funds each month?

Many thanks for your help!

Elly

Hi John: I live in Calif. I want to live in a quiet place in Sri Lanka. How much for a decent one bedroom house/apt? I can't afford more than USD200/mo. Is that doable?
Thanks so much for your help.
Carol

Hi Carol,

I'm a sri lankan, just arrived, we were in Chicago for 5 years...

The Cost of livving has considerably gone up since i last knew it.. you may not be able to find a decent 1 bedroom part for $200 a month in Colombo.. however since you are working in Ragama, my advice would be to find soemthing there.. you just might be able to find something mroe than a 1 bedroom for that price....

Not too sure if you have ebign to SL before but it's very nice palce to be, but you need alot of patience and time to adjust to the system...

Let me know if you need any help rjayamanne@yahoo.co.uk
