Hey, I have a few questions for you guys. I am moving to Sweden from Serbia for couple of years. My wife is Swedish. We can't decide what mekes more sense to buy a car in Serbia or Sweden?
The things I know: 1. Cars are app. 500Eur cheaper in Serbia then Sweden (I am buying a 10yrs old Fiat Stilo) 2. It is much cheaper to do the registration and insurance in Serbia. 3. It is possible to drive a car with Serbian plates in Sweden. The info on this online differs but most posts say for 12 months. Needs to be checked.
So, I there are two ways to do this:
Scenario 1: We buy the car in Belgrade and register in my name. We use it for a year and then either register it in Sweden or sell it in Belgrade.
Questions: For how long can a car be driven in Sweden with non-EU plates? (I read somewhere it's for one year) If it's less then a year because of the insurance, can a foreign car get a Swedish insurance? How much does it cost (approximately) to register a 2003 Fiat Stilo in Sweden? I read that if you want to register a foreign car in Sweden (import it) you need to use it for 6 months before. Does it mean 6 months in the country of origin or I can buy the car, move to Sweden, drive it there for 6 months and then get Swedish plates?
Scenario 2: We buy the car in Sweden and register it to my wifes name. She is Swedish but doesn't have a drivers license.
Questions: Can you register and insure a car to a person that doesn't have a drivers license? How complicated and expensive is it to get a permission for me to drive your car (outside of Sweden too)?
