Kids Adjusting

My husband and I are considering a move to Sweden from the U.S. with our 3 young children. I worry that they will miss the family (grandparent, Aunts, Uncles and cousins) that we will be leaving behind. I am wondering how some of you have dealt with this. I don't want our kids to grow up and resent us for moving them away from their family.

Hi! I saw your note and wanted to tell you about my experience. I moved to Sweden 16 months ago with 3 kids for a temporary expat contract. the kids adjustment was tough for the first year, but they are happy now. It really depends on the age of the kids. My 11 year old had the hardest time, but the two younger boys (7 and 2) really adjusted easier. So if your kids are under 9, i don't think you will have any issue. For kids older than 9, they will struggle at the beginning, but will take at least a year and once they make friends, they will be fine with it. I have met other american families who are quite happy after a few years hear.....but most of the kids like Sweden, its a great place to live. What you will probably find for the older kids is they will tell you they hat everything about it for about 1 year....but they will make friends and adjust.

As a parent you will feel guilty, its human nature. i felt guilty for a few months. And once my oldest daughter really struggled, i felt worse. But now that she has made friends and love it here, i think that we are doing just fine and if it was up to me, i would stay forever.
