" Here is the customs web page (go to the English PDF) for importing a car to Switzerland. http://www.zoll.admin.ch/d/rv/verzollung/auto.htm I have no personal experience. I started to look into this when I first came here, but decided the cost of transport was too great, versus the value of the car. Regards Allan "

" I thought I had posted this a week or so ago, but I must have sent it off some place else. My apologies if it cropped up somewhere inappropriate. We imported our Volvo from Chicago to Zürich. In hindsight that was not the smartest decision we could have made... We had no trouble passing the emissions test, but had to make a number of minor changes amounting to about CHF 2500 in order to meet Swiss standards. The required changes were things like disconnecting the third brakelight (placed too high), changing the headlight type (wrong shape) etc. We almost had to put in a new speedometer display (the MPH display is larger than the KPH), but the gentleman took pity on us and let that one pass. Our mechanic told us that we were quite lucky... he said the Strassesverkhersamt is often very particular about that one and it is a VERY expensive adjustment. FYI, I believe that snow tires are required during the winter months. No one actually checks, but if you get into an accident on snow covered street and you do not have the appropriate tires you are in for a big fine. (at least in Zürich). All in all, I would not do it all over again. While my husband does indeed use the car a few times a week, I have driven it exactly once in almost two years. The trains are so good here that I simply have no need for a car. If you live in an area where a car is necessary, you can find many good deals on car leasing or rental programs. There is also a program which combines a train pass with a car rental - good for vacations. It would be far more economic to lease a car once you are over here. Best of luck to you... E Dawson "

" Guten Tag and danke for the info. We have subsequently moved to Lenzberg which is not too far from Zürich. Our household goods have arrived but our car will not be here until next week. But, your message gave me some concern because it validates what I have been told by others. We decided to sell one car, bring one car, and purchase one here. The issue was we had two paid off cars and didn''t want the payments. We live in a small village called Seengen and therefore cars are a necessity. In any event, things are going great and I do appreciate the response. This forum was very helpful to us in our transition. Hopefully we''ll meet one day at the American Club or somewhere in Zürich. It''s funny because when you hear someone speaking English who sound American there is no formality about it. You just go and introduce yourself immediately. Thanks again, Tom "
