" Does anyone know if Swiss health insurance companies have an ""existing condition"" clause? My husband and I are most likely moving to Switzerland in May, and I am expecting a baby in August. I understand it will probably take a month to get the insurance, but what I wonder is if they will pay for the childbirth expenses so soon after we purchase their insurance. "

" Deborah I have tried, but can''t get an answer for you. It just doesn''t seem to be available on the web without ringing up the companies concerned. You could try contacting your local branches of Winterthur and Zurich Insurance to see what answers they can give. Alternatively here are some web sites with quoting systems who may be able to give you an answer. The first 2 sites below outline your medical rights in Switzerland, while the others provide expat insurance. I have cut out some information from the final site and the last paragraph may indicate an option for you. http://dpwww.epfl.ch/associations/acide/HealthInsuranceWebPage6.html http://www.bsv.admin.ch/aktuell/highlight/e/ http://www.demon.co.uk/dayco/expatins.html http://www.topquote.com/dynamicIndex.html http://www.expatfinancial.com/ http://home.iSTAR.ca/~tompkins/ http://www.expatfinancial.com/expathealth.htm Maternity coverage - Pre and Post-natal care will be covered after 12 months of continuous coverage up to a lifetime maximum of $25,000. The benefit is limited to $5,000 per normal delivery and $7,500 per C-Section delivery. Possibility of obtaining cover in spite of most pre-existing conditions, either with no extra charge, a surcharge or with an exclusion. Regards Allan "
