" We''re going to be shipping a car to Switzerland. Several questions: 1) How do we get the car registered (w/plates, etc.), 2) How much does it cost, 3) Is there a company that does this as a service for a small fee? 4) Is there a time limit on registration? Thanks for your help. Vaughn vaughn@sgstrading.com "

" Hi Vaughn, I have just registered a car myself. It is not too difficult to do as long as you know the rules. You may ask your moving company if they know some service but I assume it will be very expensive. You have 12 months to register your car from the day you register yourself. If your current insurance covers you while staying abroad, you can take your time. Otherwise you will have to find a car insurance in switzerland as soon as possible. For registration, you have to file some paperwork at a Strassenverkehrsamt, responsible for the Kanton (county) you will be living in. Also, a technical inspection is required. I had my car ''made ready'' for this inspection by a Swiss garage (this is kind of a requirement). In case you are proficient in German: some Strassenverkehrsamt offices, such as Zurich, have online information at http://www.stva.ch/. (choose Zürich, go to section ''technische Auskunft'', subheading ''Fahrzeugimport'', and ''Kundeninformationsblatt''. This contains a list of things you need/have to do. Also, I called the office ahead of time for detailed information on the proceedings and they were very helpful. Regarding customs: to avoid taxation, you have to proof ownership of the car for at least 6 months prior to import. Also, make sure the moving company adds your car to your shipping list for customs, even if you ship the car separate from your remaining furniture (almost got me into trouble). "
