" Hello! I am a US citizen and my wife is a Swiss citizen. Can I apply for a work permit while living in Switzerland or am I required to apply from the USA? Also, is it true that an expat may be required to leave the country (Switzerland) while awaiting approval of his work permit? Thanks, Michael "

" As far as I know, if you can get a work permit, then the rules are easy. You should go out and come back in to go through a medical checkup. And until you have the permit you are a tourist. It is the getting of the workpermit which is the hard part. Like the U.S. and Canada, companies should show that they cannot find local workers. Almost certainly you need a degree qualification and the work must be in that specialist area, where there is a shortage of labor. Graham I''m sure the Embassy in the U.K. has a lot of good information Check my site http://besu.ch/swisscc for a list of information sources and English-language clubs and events in Switzerland. "
