Advice on schooling

My husband is due to move to the Zurich/Lucerne area with work in a couple of months, with myself and our 2 children due to follow next summer.

I would like advice on schools in either of these areas please. What are the local swiss schools like? I get the impression that they are very different to those in the English system? Our children will be 6 and 3 1/2 when we move and have been in formal schooling for 2 years and mornings nursery for a year respectively. Am I right in thinking that children don't start school until they are 7 and kindergarten/pre school at 5?

We would like our children to learn Swiss German/German, but wonder if the International/Bilingual system be more appropriate, considering their ages?

Does anyone have any advice please as we need to start making plans and I am stuggling with my internet searches as my German is very limited. Soon to be improved (I hope?) as I start German at night school next week!!

Many thanks

Melanie

Hi Melanie

I don't yet have children in school over here, but a good website with lots of information would be www.xpatxchange.ch
Also a parenting magazine which we subscribe to is the 'New Stork Times". I found this to be a valuable source of information while I was pregnant here. With info on day care centres, schools etc.. The website is www.thenewstorktimes.com

Hope this helps
Nik

Hi melanie you are correct about the ages that children start local school here. The only decent way for kids to learn Swiss German is through the local schools, but all bilingual and international schools teach High German with varying degrees of intensity, plus they are full day schools with younger intakes. Zurich, Zug and Luzern all have good choices for international or bilingual education. Check out www.readysteadyrelocate.com for our expat family seminars in Zurich and Luzern/Zug. regards Helen

There is a school that teach parents to speak and read German. It is an international school. Though they emphasize teaching in English, yet they understand Swiss German is an imperative language.
