American Looking for Work in Zurich

My boyfriend and I have been commuting from New York to Zurich for the past 2 years. We have decided to make the move and I will be relocating to Zurich this fall. I currently do not have a job or visa, and since we are not married, I will not be able to stay longer than the tourist visa allows until I secure a job. As I have spoken to many people regarding the subject, most feel it will be necessary to live in Zurich in order to secure employment. I am now living in Manhattan, working in the fashion industry for an extremely reputable, high end designer in sales and marketing, and also have a degree in Public Relations from the University of Texas at Austin. I feel that with my experience I should be able to find a job in the communications field.
Our obvious concern is me not having a job. Does anyone have ideas, experience, contacts, etc in this department? Any and all ideas are welcome and appreciated!

Hi - I don't have a job for you - but thought I would write to connect and network. I am in a similar situation. My boyfriend and I have been dating long distance Boston to Zurich for 1.5 years. I am thinking of moving in November. I'm a social worker with a masters in social work and a masters in public health from Boston University. I currently work for a health service organization doing direct care and business development. I have no idea how this is going to translate to a job in Zurich. My German is pretty poor. I'd love to be in touch about your plans and any resources you come up with. What does your boyfriend do? Is he Swiss or American? Good Luck! Ali

I am in the same boat as you are in a way. I just married a German who is currently living and working in CH. Traveling back and forth is getting old and I am going to be with her end of this year. My wife is working in a very small town south of Bern. And Bern is about 80 km away from where she is. My German knowledge is very poor and that really concerns me regarding finding a job. Currently, I am a network administrator, but I am willing to do just about anything as long as I can be with my wife. Wish you the best of luck with your journey.
